…
Hello wrestling fans; here is a quick report on my experience at the 2016 Montreal Comiccon…
This year I had the privilege of working with the former head of WCW Eric Bischoff. Even though he used to play an evil character on TV, I found ‘’Easy E’’ to be indeed, very easy going. He was polite and kind with all the fans who came to him, and his prices were low for a Comiccon (40$ for a combo). He had copies of his 2006 biography for sale, along with his brand new DVD (a 3 disc set including a documentary) produced by WWE.
Among the things he said during the week-end:
-He will NOT be one of the many former GM to make an appearance on Raw with the upcoming draft;
-He said he would come back only to do something new and different from what he did before, because otherwise fans would quickly grow tired of it;
-He said he doesn’t regret anything he did in the past, but would do some things differently in hindsight
-Still proud of spoiling the results of a taped Raw, because you can’t get lower than that
-His biggest achievement in life is raising his kids
-He created his own brand of beer, the Buffalo Bill Cody beer, that is available in Wyoming and a few other states around the area;
-The Montreal card where Jacques Rougeau pinned Hulk Hogan at the Molson Center was not an official WCW card, hence the absence of nWo shirts or any merchandise;
-Hasn’t done any martial arts for almost 30 years by now;
-Goldberg was his favourite creation
-Roddy Piper was one of the few wrestler who was so over he didn’t need a belt;
On funny moment came when some fans came to him and started singing his theme song, which amazed Eric, who admitted not knowing the lyrics himself !
Once, a kid who must have been 10 years old came to him just to shake his hand an chat a little; He didn’t have any money and said he like the ‘’Old-Timer wrestlers’’. After a little while the kid left with his mom; Eric looked at me and asked me to get him back at the table; I ran after him, and told him ‘’Mr.Bischoff would like to talk to you’’ (I always dreamed of saying that sentence to someone!) Anyway, I brought him back to the table, and Eric unwrapped a DVD, signed it, and gave it to the kid, all the while saying ‘’Here’s for you, from an old timer to a young timer !’’ That was real nice of him.
He and Ric Flair also got together to pose for photos with a paralyzed man who was in a wheelchair, all for free. Saturday night, Flair faced Bischoff for an hour in a Q&A about WCW. The event was well received by wrestling fans.
Speaking of Flair, he appeared in good spirit too, ‘’Whooing’’ that fans once in a while. I was impressed with someone who had brought a vintage Mid-Atlantic poster for Flair to sign. The poster listed him as facing Buddy Rogers. Flair said it was from 1976.
When he arrived at his table, he received a call from Charlotte, who was at an Ontario live event, and they chatted a bit on video, which was cool to see. Ric was with his girlfriend who use to be ‘’Fifi the Maid’’ in WCW in the early 90’s. Fifi was real nice to everyone as well.
Scott Hall was originally scheduled to appear but was cancelled a few weeks before the event.
So as usual I had a great time at the Montreal Comiccon and I look forward to next year’s event !
Thanks for reading
Frank
