Charlie Fulton was never a serious contender for the world heavyweight championship. Nor was he ever considered a top-of-the-card performer during a two-decade career that took him around the world.
What Charlie Fulton did — with incredible success and aplomb — was to make mediocre performers look good, great performers look like world champions. During an era where Fulton was known mostly as a solid journeyman, an enhancement talent whose main role was to build up other stars, there was quite possibly no one better in the business than Gary Lee “Charlie” Fulton, who passed away last weekend at the age of 67 in his hometown of Marion, Ohio.Fulton was so good that he could have
perhaps had a bigger and more lucrative role in the profession. But, as he would
later admit, he hated the politics of the business and did everything he could
to avoid it.
“If you want to make money, that’s not the smart thing to do,” he said in a 2010 interview. “By the time I figured it out, I was branded. But I could work with anybody. I could do anything. I could be a babyface or a heel. That’s probably what kept me around so long.”
