…
Hi again everyone!Once again, it was Comiccon time in Montréal last week-end. The event is still growing, as evidenced by another record crowd here at the Palais des Congrès.
Even though the main features of the event were the cast of Star Trek ''Next Generation'' and ''Arrow'', I will concentrate my report on my (and your) favorite subject, wrestling.
Obviously, the main attraction was Hulk Hogan this year. The wrestling Icon already has a special place in the heart of the people of Montréal, and he solidified his position once again Friday night with a show called ''Hulk Hogan Uncut'', which was basically a Q&A. Hulk was really generous with his time, going well over the allotted time slot, going close to two hours. The show opened with longtime manager Jimmy Hart reminding the crowd of all of his various protégés over the year, culminating with the most famous of all. A nice video montage then played to the tune of ''Real American'' before the Hulkster made his entrance before a very noisy crowd. He actually recorded the ovation on his phone ! Close to 300 fans gathered in the auditorium to hear him talk about various topics. Here are some of the highlights:
-He said he's getting in shape for not only one more match, but also one more title run;
-Stone Cold is afraid the the crowd would boo him out of the building if they were to have a match together;
-Vince McMahon is the greatest heel of all time and he'd love to face him again;
-Ric Flair is the greatest wrestler of all time, and this is how he calls him whenever he sents him a text message;
-If he were to choose a tag-team partner, it would be Stone Cold;
-Greatest memory of Montreal is the 10 mins ovation he got on Smackdown
-He'll never say anything bad against Dixie Carter because she treated him real well;
-If he could have met Bruiser Brody years ago they would have blown the roof of the building;
-If he could do it all over again, he would use the largest arms in the world to make the sleeper hold his finisher instead of the leg drop and save his spine;
-John Cena does NOT sucks and is doing a wonderful job with ill children;
-There was never any talks about him dropping the belt back to Bret after WM9;
-He was surprised to see Taker loosing his streak , but it means Vince has a long time plan for that as well;
-The best period ever in wrestling was the 84-85 period with MTV and Wrestlemania 1;
-He regrets not having shoved Brock Lesnar on his ass when he called him ''Gran'pa'' on Raw;
-He said he loves Bobby Heenan but Jimmy Hart is the greatest manager ever;
When the show was over, he cut a promo and left to another huge ovation.
Earlier Friday, both Hulk and Hart signed autographs and posed for pictures. They also were added on Saturday to help cover-up for Jake Roberts, who had to cancel his appearance following his recent bout with pneumonia. Hart was his usual pleasant self, chatting with fans while sporting his famous white coat covered with hearts, and carrying his megaphone. His promos and photos sold for 10$. I had the chance to talk with him a little, and he was satisfied with the way his sales went. Hulk promos were 60$, while a picture with him cost 80$. he took the time to shake everyone's hand and chat a little. He seemed much less stressed than when I last met him at WrestleCon
Jacques Rougeau (The Mountie) was there indeed, to promote his family-oriented shows. He had brought along his son Cedric, who is huge. He posed with Hogan, and both were roughly the same size! Jacques was pushing hard that he would be a huge star someday, sooner than everybody thinks. If he has the talent, he may very well be, because he sure has both the size and the name. Jacques was graciously signing our personal items for free, and sold pictures of himself with Cedric for 5$.
For my part, I had the privilege of spending the day with one of the sweetest lady I've ever met in Trish Stratus, since I was appointed to be his liaison agent. It started a bit awkwardly though, as both she and Lita were 2 hours late when we came to pick her up at the hotel. She was also accompanied by her mother and her young son, Max, who is approaching 1 year old. Fortunately, she was very nice to me, and also apologized to the fans who waited that long for her. I was quite surprised that NOT ONE single person was mad, not even annoyed by this. They were actually happy to finally be able to meet her, and no one complained. She took the time to chat at length with everybody who came by, and make them feel special.
I had a blast in my role, but I also discovered that I always have to be vigilant around so many people. Indeed, one guy said he just wanted to shake her hand, but he ended up taking a selfie with her for free. Another guy tried to steal a kiss from her, and I didn't see it coming ! But for the most part, the fans were nice and respectful. Her autographs went for 30$, and photo-ops for 40$. She still had the second longest line of all the wrestling people.
Lita was also friendly, although more shy than her partner, and both took many pictures together with the fans as ''Team Bestie''. She looked in tremendous shape, and is now sporting brown hair, like Trish. Lita (who was always advertised as Amy Dumas) had brought with her a little female dog. It was amazingly quiet, spending the whole day underneath Lita's table without ever uttering a single sound. I was impressed !
Since they started late, both ladies didn't take any break on Friday, and finished at the very end of the day (a bit past 8:30).
I couldn't continue my duties with Trish on Saturday since I had to go to work (and it broke my heart!) but I decided to return on Sunday, as a fan, with my whole family. My daughter had a blast meeting the 2 women wrestler of her youth at the same time. Once again, Trish showed so much class when she signed both our pictures for free to thank me for helping her out on Friday. Even though it was my first time doing it, she was kind enough to say I did great, which was a relief.
Sunday there also was a Q&A session with wrestling historians Bert Hebert and Pat Laprade, co-authors of the best selling book ''Mad Dogs, Midgets & Srew Jobs''. It was about the history of wrestling in the province, along with the current state of the sport on French TV. I attended most of it, and it was very interesting.
I want to thank the people in charge of the wrestling end of the Montreal Comiccon for the opportunity they gave me, as I'll never forget that day I spent with the number one Diva ever. Thanks to you wrestling fans, for reading this long report until the end, and thanks to Wrestling Figs for publishing it. Can't wait for next year's comiccon !!!
See you at the matches!
Frank
