…
Tully Blanchard. Most of you see him as the second generation American professional wrestler. I see him as Dad.
This past weekend I had the opportunity to fly out to Miami with my siblings and witness history be made. My dad was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2012 as one of the original Four Horsemen.
My dad's wrestling career was before my time so all I have ever known about it is YouTube videos, pictures, fan mail and stories. This weekend changed my perspective on it all because I actually got to experience it. I heard thousands of people scream my dad's name. I saw people pull my dad aside for pictures and autographs, and I realized that my dad's career was extremely influential.
I remember many years back witnessing a match my dad had against Dusty Rhodes at an event in Lenoir, NC. My dad came out of that match with blood dripping off his forehead and I was crying because my dad was bleeding. Now that I am older I understand more about what he was trying to accomplish in the ring. He wanted to entertain the whole stadium and everyone watching. And from the attention this past weekend, I'd say he was pretty darn good at it!
Miami treated my family well this past weekend and I couldn't be more proud of my dad for the legacy he and the other Horsemen have left. Everyone knows who Tully Blanchard was in his wrestling days. He was "the bad guy" or "the technician," but not too many people are familiar with who Tully Blanchard is now.
This past week has been unbelievably bittersweet, my grandfather (Tully's father) passed away just a few days before Wrestlemania week in Miami. To see my dad holding it together while, in such a short period of time, going from his lowest low to accepting one of the greatest honors just proves to me how strong he is. My dad is sold-out to Jesus Christ and that's where he finds his strength.
