Medical Examiner: Randy "Macho Man" Savage died of heart disease
Authorities have determined that former wrestling star Randy "Macho Man" Savage died of heart disease.
Savage, 58, whose real name is Randy Poffo, became unresponsive while driving his vehicle in Seminole on May 20. After crashing into a tree, Savage was taken to Largo Medical Center and pronounced dead.
An autopsy by the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office revealed Savage had an enlarged heart with severe atherosclerosis of his coronary arteries -- more than 90-percent blockage. So the cause of death was determined to be Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, or heart disease. The manner of death was determined to be natural.
Poffo may not have known he had heart disease, said Bill Pellan, director of investigations for the Medical Examiner's Office. There was no evidence he was taking heart medication.
The autopsy also showed he suffered only minor abrasions and bruising from the crash.
As is routine, the Medical Examiner's Office tested Savage for evidence of drugs or alcohol. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.031, well below the level at which the law presumes someone to be impaired. He also had hydrocodone in his blood. Pellan said Poffo had a prescription for the hydrocodone, and the amount found in his blood was a "therapeutic level" that did not suggest abuse.
The results of the autopsy were released by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Thursday.
