GWH Inaugurates Annual Wrestling Awards
by Larry Goodman
The Georgia wrestling scene has always been hot, and although some promotions and wrestlers come and go, many stay the same. 2009 was no different, and Georgia Wrestling History set out to begin their inaugural Georgia Wrestling Awards special, even if on short notice.
“The GeorgiaWrestlingTK site had been running as long as GWH, and our staff had often been polled to vote for their annual awards, so we never felt the need to duplicate that over here, “said Rich Tate, co-owner of GeorgiaWrestlingHistory.com with Larry Goodman. “However, when we learned that TK had apparently shut down, we opted to pick the ball up and run with it.”
According to Tate, this was noticed a little late, and he acknowledges they had a short time to put the awards and process together, but promises to allow for a bit longer lead time next year. “We ran a little tight on time, but I still think we managed to include enough voters from both segments – the people from within the business, as well as the fans – to do the honors justice.”
They also added something TK had not done. “For the primary awards, those voted on by people within the wrestling business, we gave them names that would forever be attached to names from history. We believe it adds a nice touch to the process, and perhaps even leads some to do some further research on names in which they may be unfamiliar,” Tate said. “We did receive some feedback from some folks asking why certain people were noted within the award names, and we have what I feel are good explanations for those distinctions up in the Awards section at GWH.”
The awards were broken down into three different segments. The GWH staff joined wrestlers, referees, managers, promoters, bookers, etc., in selecting winners for eleven different categories, all of which earned the historical tags. Fans were called on to place their picks for seven honors. Three other awards were voted on by all of the above.
In all, more than 100 people from within the business voted, and more than 200 fans came forth with their opinions. Five members from the GWH staff contributed to the selections.
“It was a great turnout, and I consider it successful in that we managed to have a terrific turnaround considering the short timeline we had,” Tate said. “However, I would also like to note that of those that voted, not all voted in each category, as we asked folks to be honest and not pick in a category if they couldn’t truly justify doing so, perhaps due to limited exposure.”
The most overwhelming voting from the fan segment was for Favorite Babyface, which was won by J-Rod. “It was not unanimous, but John had the biggest lead at the close of polling than anyone else in any other category,” Tate acknowledged.
J-Rod said, "I would just like to say it's a honor to be able to be in this business. I have meet a lot of truly amazing people in my short time. And to know that the fans have as much fun watching me in the ring as I do being in the ring makes all this well worth it. Thanks to everyone that voted for me."
Cru Jones was voted by the fans as Favorite Heel. Upon winning the award, Jones told GWH, “I would like to thank the person that is responsible for all this: myself. Seriously, I would also like to thank all my female fans for voting for me, especially J-Rod's mom and all the army wives in all the towns I wrestle in.”
Fans chose Rampage Pro Wrestling as their Favorite Promotion. RPW owner Dr. Johnny Gayton had the following comments upon learning of the honor: “It’s humbling and it’s amazing. We’ve only been in existence a little over a year. To have so many people vote for us, it’s an incredible stamp of approval from the fans on the product that we’re trying to deliver; quality sports entertainment, something that you can take the whole family to, and see good athletes perform. My father, who died in October, and I shared many a pleasant hour watching wrestling when I was a child. It was something that we continued to enjoy together right up until his death. In fact, we even had him in a storyline shortly before he died. He loved it. When he died we gave him a ten-bell salute. Now I want even more for RPW to be successful in order to honor him. I am ecstatic about the awards that RPW received, and I hope that is just the beginning.”
Other award winners for those categories selected by the fans were Mike Taylor (Favorite Wrestler), Charlie Cash (Favorite Manager or Valet), and Cash Vault’s Kyle Matthews and Frankie Valentine (Favorite Tag Team).
Matthews also won the Tim Woods Award for Best Technician. Matthews was one of the most traveled wrestlers on the
Matthews’ calling card is a devastating corner dropkick, known as the Slurpee Kick, because recipients are unable to eat solid food for a while. “It’s quite an honor, because all the boys voted for it. I highly value their opinions, and it’s great to have their respect,” Matthews told GWH.
However, the top award as voted on by GWH staff members and those from within the business was the Ray Gunkel Award for Best Overall Wrestler, which went to Phil Shatter. Shatter became the NWA National Heavyweight Champion on January 17 and held the title throughout 2009. Shatter made a number of title defenses in
Upon learning of his victory Shatter told GWH, “I want to thank my peers for this award. It means a lot when you work to be the best at what you do and in return your peers show you that you have accomplished that.” Shatter doesn’t plan to slow down, adding “I look forward to what will come in 2010 and will not let anyone down.”
Shadow Jackson, the charismatic “People’s Champion”, maintained his status as the most popular singles wrestler in both NWA Anarchy and Alternative Pro Wrestling, took the Tommy Rich Award for Best Performer.
“I would like to thank the wrestlers, everyone around the state of
The Assassins Award for Best Tag Team or Stable went to Talent & Money, made up of J.T. Talent & Drew Pendleton III. Talent & Money elevated themselves from a mid-card pack of tag teams in NWA Anarchy to become two time champions in 2009. Their feud with New Wave was unquestionably one of the highlights of the year. It produced two of Anarchy’s most memorable matches of 2009, a blood Falls Count Anywhere at “Hardcore Hell” and an insane Ladder Match at “Hostile Environment”.
“I would like to thank the staff of GWH and my colleagues,” Pendleton told GWH. “It’s been a long, hard journey for me and Talent. We came up training together and put a lot of heart and soul into it. Winning the tag team award is a great honor, and I just really appreciate the opportunity to wrestle and put on a great show for the fans. The thing that stands out the most was working with New Wave. We beat the hell out of each other for the greater part of the year, and had two of the most violent and unforgiving matches as long as I’ve been wrestling, some say in Anarchy history. I came very close to breaking my neck falling off ladder, and Talent came very close to breaking his back across a ladder. Those guys both got hurt. The dedication we showed to putting on a good show and giving everything we had was pretty special.”
Talent also was honored by his peers with the Brad Armstrong / A.J. Styles Award for Most Improved Wrestler. Talent’s exploits in 2009 extended beyond his tag team success in NWA Anarchy. Talent got an opportunity to demonstrate his mic skills at Alternative Pro Wrestling, where he hosted The Talent Show and was the star performer (along with Donovan Sweet) in the hilarious “Secret Admirer” storyline on APW AFTERSHOCK. Talent also branched out by making regular appearances for SECW, where he won both the Extreme Division Championship and the Heavyweight Championship.
Talent told GWH upon learning of the honor, “It’s a great feeling. I’ve had the privilege of working with some good guys and having the right people in my ear. Cru Jones helped me out a whole lot, and working with Jeremy Vain helped me out huge. Everybody has helped me out. I give the credit to those people.”
Jeff G. Bailey is on a level all his own among
Bailey thanked “everyone who voted for me. It's an honor to win an award that was voted on by my peers. It becomes double the honor, when it's an award named after one of my heroes, the late, great, Gary Hart.”
The Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling events that Scott East promoted at the VFW Fairgrounds in
Rob Adonis won the Ole Anderson / Leo Garibaldi Award for Best Booker. Since Adonis assumed the role of booker for Rampage Pro Wrestling in October, the promotion has produced the most entertaining storyline of the year, a soap opera/mystery merging the alleged paralysis of a wrestler due to in-ring accident (Adonis) and the attempted takeover by the mysterious Mr. Big. The status of the RPW singles titles has also been elevated with name stars, Bull Buchanan, Sal Rinauro and Jimmy Rave as the current champions.
Adonis told GWH, “It is a great honor to be recognized. I want to thank God for blessing me with a supporting wife and a wonderful staff of talent to work with.” He then added, “I think that the real winners of this award should be two veterans of the squared circle. I won't name them, but we all know who they are. They are truly the best in this category, and I appreciate the opportunity to study and learn form them, and for the opportunity to give a touch of input.”
NWA Anarchy continued its status as the most recognized promotion in
Behrens said, "I was pleased to see that NWA Anarchy was named 2009's Best Promotion. The credit goes to Jerry Palmer, and the Anarchy crew and staff who work hard to deliver a strong wrestling product and in a family environment. I am honored that the award was named for myself and legendary
The Gordon Solie / Ed Capral Award for Best Announcer winner was Greg Hunter, who has established himself as the preeminent play-by-play announcer in
When he discovered he had won the award, Hunter said, “To be voted by my peers in the wrestling business to win the Solie/Capral award as the best announcer is truly an honor. The fans, of course, give you an immediate response when they see you, but to know that the people who have been in the same places and go through the same things have that level of respect for you is truly an honor. I want to thank my colleagues. I greatly appreciate it.”
Jeff McGowan was a multiple winner, earning the Charlie Harben / Charlie Smith Award for Best Referee, and also Favorite Referee, the latter being voted by the fans. Refereeing is in his blood and it showed, as Jeff, the son of Scrappy McGowan, was voted best referee by both his colleagues and the wrestling fans. McGowan was the top referee for RPW and also made several appearances at NWA Anarchy during 2009.
“It’s a great honor to be named for the Harben/Smith award,” said McGowan. “I’m really at a loss for words. I want to thank all the fans. I want to thank all my peers. And to everyone that voted for me, I just want to say thank you.”
Rampage Pro Wrestling won the first award that all segments of voters were asked to choose. They got the nod for Best Television or Internet Video Broadcast. RPW aired a weekly 60 minute television show in
RPW Matchmaker and Creative Consultant Nick Patrick told GWH, “It’s a great step in the right direction. It’s something I set out to do, because my father and I have been working together in writing and formatting the shows. To win the award from the people where we live and where I grew up is a tremendous honor, and I really appreciate everybody who voted for us.” Rampage owner Johnny Gayton added, “One of my dreams was to have a show that people could watch and watch with their kids and see more local sports heroes.”
Our own GWH won for Best Wrestling Related Website, with Peach State Pandemonium winning for Best Internet Radio Program. Tate said, “It’s always nice to know that our efforts are being recognized, especially since what we do is purely voluntary, and we couldn’t do what we do without the hard-working folks behind the scenes, or without the support of those who make GWH a part of their day.”
On the radio portion, Tate commented, “It’s also good to know that the hard work that goes into putting together a weekly radio show is not falling on deaf ears, and I also thank the folks from the other shows on our network for their efforts as well.” Les Thatcher added, “It’s great to be able to have folks want to hear what we have to say, even if they sometimes may not agree. I’m looking forward to 2010 with the new Ringside Rap, and the opportunity to continue with Rich and welcome the addition of Mike Sempervive.”
