Fabulous Moolah passes away

Written: November 3, 2007

WWE is saddened by the passing of Mary Lillian Ellison, who was known to sports-entertainment fans as Hall of Famer Fabulous Moolah. She passed away last night in Columbia, S.C.

In the world of women’s wrestling, there will always be one irrefutable legend that stands head and shoulders above the rest: The Fabulous Moolah. She was the longest reigning champion in the history of her chosen sport, or any sport for that matter. And with more than 50 years in the business to her credit, she established a legacy that will never be forgotten, making her name synonymous with female wrestling.

WWE.com will have more on Fabulous Moolah as it becomes available.

WWE has posted some remembering Moolah:

Moolah was Simply Fabulous

One of Moolah's gimmicks was Slave Girl Moolah.  Moolah was valet for "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, who I ran a Fan Club for.  (I will be having a nice tribute to Moolah in my snail mail Wrestling Chatterbox Newsletter.  She was a great lady.

Moolah had just had successful shoulder surgery, and last night felt nauseous.  Later the hospital called and said she passed away.  She had a heart attack and couldn't be revived.  Funeral is expected to be on Wednesday, so all her grandchildren can be there.

If anyone would like to send a card, send it to:

The Family of Lillian Ellison - 101 Moolah Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29223-3931.

Moolah and her companion Mae Young

One of my readers sent me these photo's a while back, at that time I felt it wasn't right to post them.  But now I believe they are a great tribute to a great lady.

Also Mike Lano sent me the photo of Moolah, Lou Thesz and Buddy Rogers, and Johnny Valiant, Moolah, Thesz, Buddy Rogers and Mick Foley.  All photo's were taken at John Arezzi's Weekend of Champions....

Moolah will be sorely missed.  Our sincere sympathy to her family, friends and fans...
