10/7 NWA Arena Report
By: Larry Goodman
NWA Anarchy kick started the build for the annual Halloween extravaganza at last night’s TV taping. When the smoke cleared, three of the top matches for Fright Night ’06 had been revealed, including an 8 man tag featuring Anarchy owner Jerry Palmer and “The Rev” Dan Wilson on opposing sides, and a double tables match for the tag titles.
It was a good show, but it didn’t pack quite the wallop the company was hoping for due to the lower than usual crowd size. Anarchy was up against the some stiff competition in the form of the Big Red Apple Festival in Cornelia and the Georgia/Tennessee football game. Attendance barely cracked 100, the smallest crowd of 2006.
My sense is that the excitement level about Fright Night isn’t quite where it needs to be at this point, especially considering that for the first time ever, Anarchy is running a larger venue up the road in
The show opened with the introduction of the first “Anarchy Angel” Mary Butcher, who will be serving as a ring attendant. Greg Hunter had the pleasure of parading the lovely newcomer around the ringside area. She’s got the looks and the poise for the role. There hasn’t been a hot woman at ringside in Cornelia since Athena, and that was five years ago.
(1) Hayden Young & Austin Creed beat Brett Thunder & Adrian Hawkins in 4:23. A babyface vs. babyface match, which is a relatively rare occurrence in Anarchy. I think the idea was to give everyone involved a chance to shine, but they were off in spots, so it ended up as a situation where nobody stood out all that much. The finish saw Hawkins hit a springboard lariat on Creed Hawkins got a near fall with a small package and Creed reversed it to score the pinfall.
(2) Shaun Tempers (with Dan Wilson & Dominous & Azrael & Iceberg) beat Windwalker in 2:44. Tempers beat up on Windwalker. Windwalker made the stereotypical Injun comeback complete with war yelps. Tempers hooked the ropes to avoid the Wahoo chop, but Windwalker then hit it for a near fall. Moments later, Windwalker crashed and burned on a double jump moonsault. Tempers pinned Windwalker with a Tiger Bomb.
The evil reverend
(3) Slim J beat
(4) Jeremy V & Jason Blackman beat Justice Served (Jason Justice & Miki Free) to advance in the Tables Tornado Tag Team Tourney in (5:43). Fans chanted for tables and they got them. V got a ton of heat. They did a killer spot where Justice used Free’s back as a platform for a corner splash on both heels. Awesome selling by V and Blackman here. Just when it looked like the heels were done for, V pulled the ropes down to dump Justice. V and Blackman doubled up on Free. Justice pulled Blackman out and sent him into the rail. Meanwhile, Free hit a vertical suplex turned powerslam on V. Justice propped a table up in the corner. Justice Served tried to whip V through the table, and Blackman made the save with a Pounce on his partner. Justice was no selling V’s offense. V tripped over the ringsteps as he was backpedaling. Devil’s Rejects appeared at ringside. Free got into it with Iceberg. In the ensuing confusion, Dominous put Justice through the table when Speedy Nelson wasn’t looking. The NWA Arena fans know a screw job when they see one. They showered Justice Served with applause for their efforts.
An ad on the WrestleVison invited fans to become “part of the madness” at Fright Night ’06 on 11/4 at the Remember When Theater in Helen.
The Wrestle Vision showed Anarchy announcer Greg Hunter backstage with Jeff G. Bailey and his NWA Elite (Onyx and Jeff Lewis). Bailey said Patrick Bentley’s use of the full nelson was an insult to Onyx, and he was going to pay for it. Bailey said it would take three men Bentley’s size to tear up a picture of Onyx. Palmer got into a discussion with Bailey as the camera cut off.
(5) Seth Delay & Patrick Bentley beat NWA Elite (Onyx & Jeff Lewis with Jeff G. Bailey) in 14:41. Lewis deposited his robe into the waiting arms of Ms. Butcher with the class and style of a polished veteran. Bailey didn’t appear at ringside until the action already underway. This was one of several matches where the Poodle Attack Squad shouted down a small but hardcore group of heel fans. The babyface team got heat on Lewis. At 4:00, Lewis backed Delay into the Elite’s corner for a tag, and Onyx stomped a mudhole in him. Delay used his quickness to regain control, but Onyx backed him in the corner again. Lewis gave Delay a wicked Snake Eyes and the beatdown was on. Bailey whacked Delay HARD with his shoe. They did a cool spot where Lewis was riding Delay piggyback style, and Delay ran towards the corner, smacking Lewis head into the top turnbuckle. But Lewis dragged Delay over to his corner and tagged out. Onyx tried to destroy Delay’s back. When Lewis came off the middle rope and landed crotch first on Delay’s knee, the tag was made. Bentley applied the full nelson to Lewis, who went to the ropes. Onyx squared off with Bentley for the first time. Bentley and Delay gave Onyx a double vertical suplex. Onyx responded with a double lariat. Onyx then gave Delay three of the highest, most explosive back bodydrops ever seen in the NWA Arena. Truly amazing stuff. Onyx confidently went for the full nelson, and Bentley countered with a roll up for to score the pinfall. Biggest pop of any finish. Onyx was pissed. Bailey was shocked.
(6) Adam Roberts beat Christian Hayme in 4:09. Roberts got heat. Hayme showed fire, but not much love for him from the crowd. Roberts gave Hayme a stiff clothesline in the corner. They traded. Roberts hit the Big Thump powerslam for a near fall. Hayme came back with a tornado DDT for a double down spot. Cool finisher by Roberts. It was an elevated cutter variation where he dropped Hayme from a fireman’s carry position into Caprice Coleman’s Thermal Shock.
(7) Brandon Phoenix (with “Stray Cat” Brodie Chase) beat Salvatore Rinauro via submission to retain the NWA Anarchy TV title in 11:31. There were two great things about this match, the way it was laid out and the antics of Brodie Chase. Make it three. Rinauro’s sparkly blue vest is an old style classic. Fans chanted “homeless #####” at Chase. Rinauro kept setting
(8) Urban Assault Squad (Nemesis & Shadow Jackson) beat
Palmer came out. “That’s what I call Team Anarchy.” Palmer predicted that UAS would regain the tag belts at Fright Night. Palmer said
