FUNK'S CORNER - A LOOK AT "SACRIFICE"From the TNA Website
"Sacrifice" comes to Pay Per View Sunday May 14th at 8:00 pm eastern. Christian Cage will be defending the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Abyss with James Mitchell in his corner. This Championship Match will be held under special conditions. (Full Metal Mayhem) Tables, Ladders, Chairs and Chains are legal.
In a training session at the Funking Conservatory, our Champion, Johnny Magnum asked me if as NWA World Champion, I ever had to face someone like Abyss?
It didn't take long for me to answer. On a Friday night in August of 1972, I took a Taxi from the White House Hotel to the Atlanta City Auditorium where I was to defend the NWA World Championship against a man billed as Killer Ox Baker. The word was that he had killed two very famous wrestlers from the Georgia Territory, Alberto Torres and Ray Gunkel.
Much like Abyss, Ox was big and so strong naturally he didn't even know his own strength. As I stepped out of the taxi, wrestling fans pleaded with me not to even go into the ring against The Ox. I must say after hearing of the death of Alberto Torres after a match with Ox Baker in Omaha, Nebraska with a ruptured spleen and listening to dressing room stories describing the death of Ray Gunkel, Ray died of a heart attack in the dressing room in Savannah, Georgia after taking repeated heart punches to the chest from The Ox. For the first time in my life, I was worried about stepping into the ring to defend the NWA World Championship.
Listening to manager James Mitchell speak to Abyss, after he nearly drowned Christian Cage in his own swimming pool, "Stop or you will never get a chance at the NWA World Championship," I got the same feeling for one of my best students ever, Christian Cage.
When you look at the historical list of NWA World Champions, Christian Cage's wrestling style is most like that of Pat O'Connor. (NWA World Champion, (1959 - 1961) However when defending the NWA World Championship against the likes of Abyss and Monty Brown, Christian has pulled out all stops and has gone for a high risk wrestling style that could bring him victory or defeat instantly or serious injury. TNA wrestling fans like this style and my guess is Christian Cage is not going to change.
After watching his first two NWA Championship matches, it is evident to me that Christian Cage is going to be unique in his wrestling style among the NWA World Champions of the past. Christian will pull out all stops.
The NWA World Championship is the most coveted championship in professional wrestling. Christian Cage has said he would die for it. We have heard James Mitchell tell Abyss, "Let him (Christian) breathe or we will never have a chance for the NWA World Championship." My advice to Christian Cage, it is good to die for something you believe in, however for the NWA World Championship, Christian must be ready to kill for it.
Better said, Christian, be ready to do anything to keep the NWA World Championship.
