Funk's Corner - Bruno Sammartino
During the four and a half years that I was NWA World Heavyweight Champion I traveled to territories around the world wrestling the top wrestlers in each territory except New York City and the upper East Coast of the United States.
The reason was New York City and the surrounding area was owned by Vince McMahon Sr. and their World Champion was Bruno Sammartino. (This was the result of a split in the NWA line of succession years earlier.)
New York was doing capacity business with Bruno as the WWWF World Champion as was the National Wrestling Alliance with me as the NWA World Champion. Both sides were satisfied with capacity business and there was no match ever considered between myself and Bruno Sammartino. As a result until World Wrestling Reunion I had never had the opportunity to get in the ring with Bruno or talk with him other than just a few casual and passing acquaintances.
At World Wrestling Legends Reunion we not only had the chance to get to know each other, but Bruno was in my corner as Mike Graham and I wrestled Tully Blanchard and David Flair managed by J. J. Dillon. This match will be available on pay per view April 29th.
