Professional wrestlers are lined up to grapple with the issue of homeless cats.
The Alberta Wrestling Federation will give $5 from each ticket sold for its April 16 show to help the Hervey Foundation for Cats, which loses its home at the end of April.
"The community helps us by buying tickets, so why not give back to the community?" said wrestling federation owner Perry Delbridge, adding he was touched by the plight of the non-profit, no-kill cat rescue and adoption centre.
And the fundraiser for the Hervey foundation has won Delbridge brownie points with his daughters, age 11 and 10. "Both my kids are cat lovers. We have three cats. They read cat books all the time," he said.
Next month's fundraiser can't come soon enough for the Hervey Foundation for Cats. The foundation's home in Stony Plain, a 1,000-square-metre warehouse, is being torn down to make way for a new condo development.
Founder and president Marjorie Hervey is appealing for donations as she desperately tries to scrape together enough money for a new home for roughly 150 cats and kittens.
"We're looking forward to the event," said the thankful wrestling fan. "We're trying to stay very, very optimistic."
She has a five-acre sanctuary at her home, but it's only licensed for 75 cats and needs a new roof, at a cost of $25,000.
Hervey said she needs to raise an estimated $25,000 for a second building on the acreage, and also needs a licence to house 200 cats and an animal adoption centre on the property, until she can lease a new location in Stony Plain.
Hervey collects cats from animal pounds and humane societies, which are typically going to be euthanized.
Tickets for the wrestling show cost $20 each and can be bought through the Alberta Wrestling Federation hotline at 964-5904 or through the Hervey Foundation for Cats.
The show takes place April 16 at 4 p.m. at the St. Albert Community Hall, 17 Perron St .
