Transcript from Mattel’s WWE Chat!
Here is the transcript from Mattel's WWE.com chat last night.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Hello everyone
Derek Handy (Mattel): Hi everyone!
Corey Clayton (WWE.com): WWE Universe, please welcome Mattel action figure designers Bill Miekina and Derek Handy!!
Corey Clayton (WWE.com):
Bill and Derek are here to talk about Mattel's WWE action figures ... which are your favorites and how figures come together. Plus, we have a special trivia contest coming up for all of you, for a chance to win a special prize!
Corey Clayton (WWE.com):
Bill and Derek, you have the floor ... tell us a little about yourselves and what you do at Mattel.
The Fink:
Mark: Ilike the line 2, and it would be great if tf the good folks at Mattel would produce a Howard Finkel figure.....ME, your legendary ring announcer and Hallof Famer!!!!!
Bill Miekina (Mattel):
Well my name is Bill Miekina, I have been a fan of WWE since Wrestlemania 2, and i was hired 2 and a half years ago to work on the WWE line.
Derek Handy (Mattel):
I'm Derek Handy. I work with Bill on the Basic and Collector figures. I've been working in the business for about 10 years. I came to Mattel to work on the WWE line specifically.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): This came 10 years after I decided to go to toy design school.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): So my long term plans paid off
Corey Clayton (WWE.com): Cool! If you have questions for Derek and/or Bill about Mattel, please start your question with "Derek, ..." or "Bill, ..." or "Hey Mattel Guys...." .... you get the point. We'll save great questions for them to answer all night long.
Derek Handy (Mattel):
We have more Legends coming out this year. At comic con this year we will be announcing more about future Legends releases.
The Fink:
Derek: More specifically, which Comic Con will that be, as they are all over the country
Corey Clayton (WWE.com):
BTW, just some quick ground rules about Mattel questions: We can't go into what future figures are coming out until they are formally announced by Mattel. So please, no questions on "Will you make a ____ figure?" and so on.
Derek Handy (Mattel): Comic-Con San Diego. It is in July 21-24th.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I also want to acknowledge in light of Friday's news what a privilege and honor it was for me to help design the Macho Man Randy Savage figures for Mattel.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): On a lighter note is there any possibility that i could try to outthink the Fink?
The Fink:
Bill: You sure can
The Fink: What late 80's -early 90's tag team had a "wacky" sidekick named Jameson for a period of time back then?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Bushwhackers
Comment From Anthony
mattel guys, will their be a WWE Comic Con exclusive this year?
Derek Handy (Mattel):
We will have an exclusive give away Rey Rumbler figure this year.
Comment From Guest
hey mattel, is there any word on that 4-pack of figures including daniel bryan, cena, kane and ziggler all with previous respective champonships which we saw pics of a few months ago?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): That is a Target exclusive pack that should be available in the fall
Comment From Jakobman76
Hey Mattel Guys if I wanted to be a toy designer what type of schooling would you suggest?
Bill Miekina (Mattel):
When I decided I wanted to be a toy designer I was guided to the toy design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. They have a degree in Toy Design. I graduated from there in spring of 2003.
Derek Handy (Mattel): I went to school for Illustration, but I was lucky enough to have teachers that allowed me to spend most of my time sculpting. A lot of training for this job comes from experience. They really isn't anything like being in the business.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I also understand that Otis here in California has a specialized toy design program as well
Bill Miekina (Mattel): If you are serious about toy design I would recommend checking out one of those schools.
Comment From ThePhenomenalEx
Derek: Who's your favorite current superstar?
Derek Handy (Mattel): Hmm...it is hard to pick a fav. I have a lot of respect for Morrison. It is too bad he is out for a while.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): As a Chicagoan I will always pull for CM Punk
Comment From vargonium
mattel peeps who is your favorite person to make their figures?
Derek Handy (Mattel): Believe it or not I was working on a Cody Rhodes figure today that is looking awesome.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Of the Superstars on the present roster I had a lot of fun working on the Elite Zach Ryder figure.
Derek Handy (Mattel): My favorite of all time is still probably the Rey Entrance great.
Comment From Chris Bednarz
WOO WOO WOO YOU KNOW IT!!!!
Comment From Higa Feds
Zack Ryder = Internet Ratings
Derek Handy (Mattel): Take care spike your hair.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I also enjoyed making the Defining Moments Ultimate Warrior figure. There was a lot to get right on that figure and I think I got most of it right.
Comment From RIP MACHO MAN
REST IN PEACE RANDY!!!! YOU WILL BE MISSED
Bill Miekina (Mattel): He was one of a kind for sure
Derek Handy (Mattel): I missed out on filming the Comic-con video last year. I wish I could have been there. Matt and Bill got a once in a life time chance.
RIP Randy
Corey Clayton (WWE.com): Hitman says he's excited to be back on Raw .... Hart acknowleges that he has differences with King, but still respects him .... but has NONE for Cole!
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I was live at Wrestlemania 13 to watch him and Stone Cold. That may have been the best match I have ever seen live
Comment From vargonium
he was in the raw elimination chamber twice!? no wwe championship matches? really truth!?!?!?!?!
Bill Miekina (Mattel): He did not last long in either so maybe he doesnt remember
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Little known fact: John Cena figures from Mattel sell very well.
Derek Handy (Mattel): I can't see him on the shelf.
Derek Handy (Mattel): what did Truth just say?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): He did not mention the action figure!
Derek Handy (Mattel): Did Cena take his son?
Comment From smarty
are you guys paying attention to relative heights?
Derek Handy (Mattel): We do use relative height to plan the figures. It gets a little tricky at times since we some guys are not really their billed height. Then is starts to get subjective. All of the Superstars work into height brackets. So all of the figure heights are relative.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Mason is probably mad about the Bluebirds
Derek Handy (Mattel): Who want a Michael Cole figure in their collection?
Corey Clayton (WWE.com): Question for Mattel ... how does Mattel decide who should be next in line for action figures? Do you use online forums, polls, focus groups, etc to help decide?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): A combination of factors go into how we decide who gets inlcuded in the line. TV time is obviously a large factor.
Comment From dan88
Hi Mattel, when will we see the new tag team belts for figures?
Derek Handy (Mattel): We are working on the tag belts right now. We don't have the exact release date yet, but they are coming.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I also try to itake into account visually interesting outfits and decos
Bill Miekina (Mattel): We also aim to add variety to the line as well so when we get a chance to inlcude figures of Superstars that have not had a figure before we try to do so.
Comment From Chris Bednarz
Bill, Derek is it annoying when ever superstar changes their attire during the middle of making there figure or has that ever happen?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): It does sometimes feel like trying to nail an egg into the wall keeping on top of all the deco changes
Bill Miekina (Mattel): During the last year we had such a hard time trying to keep up with CM Punk's rapidly changing appearance.
Derek Handy (Mattel): Attire changes happen all the time. It is good in that it gives us some variety to pick from. It gets difficult when someone wears only one outfit, and then changes to only a new outfit. Then our stuff looks out of date before we are finished designing it.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): We are in the point in the year where we will be holding back on announcements on stuff like specific lineups and the Legends line until San Diego Comic Con so I cannot answer that question specifically. however i will say that we plan on making as big an impression as we did last year
9:38
Derek Handy (Mattel): We are working on a few new Divas now. Eve is coming out in wave 11. We have a little lag in our Divas. There were a few changes roster we were not anticipating, but we are getting back to having Divas in the line.
Derek Handy (Mattel): yes. short haired CM Punk will be coming out in Elite later this year.
Comment From JedsWorld
Mattel figures are used for stop-motion animation, not just play and display - have you ever seen any wwe figure animations?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Yes I have seen a few and they are pretty impressive.
Comment From Cori050
So is Derek and Bill the guys that come up with the ideas 4 the superstars cloths? I'm confused!!!
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I am responsible for designing all the cloth goods that have been included with the figures.
Comment From Jordan
Will we see the likes of Wade Barrett or Alberto Del Rio any time soon in Elite form?
Derek Handy (Mattel): Wade and Alberto are both coming out this year in Elite. Typically, people debut in Basic before Elite. Whenever someone gets a significant amount of air time, you can be pretty sure we are working on their Elite figure.
Comment From Ben Collier
Hi Mattel, Bill this one is for you. Is there any chance of Elite Jackets being made of softer plastic in the future lines. Eilte 8 Taker, and Edge, as well as Elite 9 Miz's jackets were a pain to take off and almost impossible to move.
Bill Miekina (Mattel): The jackets actually are made of a softer material than they were in earlier Elite lines. The jakcets do have to be a certain rigidity in order to keep shape and detail, and also not to tear and break when played with
Comment From Stephen
Mattel, any news on a Daniel Bryan action figure?
Bill Miekina (Mattel): Daniel Bryan will be in Basic Wave 11, which will be hitting retail shortly
Comment From Kailee
This is gonna sound dumb,Fink. But,is it weird that I'm gonna be 19 in 4 months and I have figurines?
The Fink: Absolutely not!!! Whatever your age is, it is cool to have memorabilia
Bill Miekina (Mattel): I am in my 30s and I still buy and dispaly all my figures
The Fink: And things to appreciate in value, in some cases
Corey Clayton (WWE.com): So Derek and Bill ... tell us that aren't big action fig fans ... What are the differences between basic, Legends, Elite and Defining Moments figures?
Derek Handy (Mattel): Basic figures are where we build out the world and create the most depth in our roster. We release 72 basic figures each year. Elite figures have increased articulation and custom accessories. Legends are the same quality as Elites but they celebrate the heritage of WWE. Defining Moments are our ultimate versions of the Superstars. They have the best deco and the best accessories.
Derek Handy (Mattel): We're working on a Kharma figure right now.
