A Badstreet Perspective checks in with random thoughts
By: Dave Whitaker
Hi kids. Remember me? Longtime wrestling fan. Over the past year, I've been a suffering fan. Trying to start a small business in a small town with narrow-minded people can be a pain in the rear. Right now, since the issues which were keeping me from doing my job have been resolved, I am going to try to put together a column. However, I make no guarantees of prompt replies due to the fact my schedule as well as health isn't what it used to be.
If you listen to some smart marks, TNA Wrestling is the next great thing. They rant about Raw and Smackdown, and will often say things like "At least TNA is coming on soon" or "TNA please hurry because WWE sucks." But is TNA really that better? I watch Impact (or most of the show) every week. And I don't see where all the hype is coming from. Jeff Jarrett's promos are boring. AMW used to be a great tag team, now they're run of the mill heels. Matches involving great workers are usually marred by outside interference.
"But the PPV's are awesome," you say. Are they? I wouldn't have been happy about paying money to see Jeff Jarrett and his flunkies beat up Sting. I wouldn't enjoy seeing title matches with everyone running in while the referee is too stupid to simply turn around or listen to what's happening. I love guys like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, I've got a permanent membership in the smark society. But I can't get exicted about a promotion that claims to trumpet wrestling and exciting talent like Styles, when so much of the show is around WCW and WWE rejects.
As a Bret Hart fan, I've heard so many times that I need to "get over" Montreal. That "Bret screwed Bet" because he "wouldn't do what was right for the business." Well, it's so nice to know that once again, WWE is practicing the concept of "do as we say, not as we do." Just like they whine about spoilers being on Internet sites, then they do the same thing. I am at a loss to understand how they expect fans to forget Montreal when they decide to bring it into whatever storyline they wish.
If it sounds like I've done a lot of griping, it's because I've found wrestling overall to be boring lately. And no, it's not because I read results online. I could read results of ECW tapings, but still enjoy the shows. Because the quality of work, the experience, it was fun. But what's the fun in seeing the Boogeyman eat worms again? Or the tired ramblings of Scott D'Amore in TNA? In other words, what is there for me to care about? As I knew would happen, the lack of any real alternatives in wrestling has made for some dreary TV.
Which means I'm not going to be writing regularly. My time, as well as my interest, just isn't there for a weekly column. But I wanted to check in, say hello, etc. I still plan on answering all feedback, just probably not as fast as I used to. If you want to write, gripe back, say hello, it's [email protected] or [email protected]
Thanks for stopping by. Later.
