$10,000 raised for UVA Children’s Hospital, Hall got in the ring. Photo’s included….
He's just worried about coming off as being a cocky guy to the other wrestlers.
"I can tell I'm a prima donna now," Hall said from his Florida home. "It's been a long time since I've [wrestled] in a high school. [The other wrestlers] would slap me if I walked into the locker room and said, 'God, it's been a long time.' "
His high school-less streak ends Oct. 28 when the fifth annual Night of the Super-stars comes to Waynesboro High School for the final time. That night, Hall will be in the corner of former Wolfpack member and close friend X-Pac.
Stuarts Draft resident Marvin Ward - who wrestled in the WCW under the Doug Gibson moniker - started the event five years ago with all the money raised going to the University of Virginia Children's Hospital. It's a place that Ward said is very near and dear to his heart after his two daughters were born premature and treated there. Both are healthy now, but Ward continued with his quest to say thank you in a unique way - promoting wrestling.
But having been in the business for as long as he had, Hall had to make sure if traveling to Waynesboro was the right thing for him to do.
"At first, I was a little bit leery," he said.
The world of wrestling is filled with plenty of unscrupulous promoters, and Hall said there was no way he was going to wrestle for someone who would not give the money to the hospital as promised.
"I checked into it and made sure everything was on the up-and-up," he said.
Fellow wrestlers told Hall the Waynesboro event was legit. He quickly signed up.
The purple and gold of Waynesboro's gym is a far cry from big-time arenas packed with fans wearing your T-shirts and screaming your name. Those days, Hall said, were a dream come true hav-ing grown up watching wres-tling and wanting to be a wrestler.
Hall, 48, was on top of the world when he jumped Vince McMahon's WWE ship and headed south to Ted Turner-owned WCW. There, he along with fellow WWE refugee Kevin Nash (known as Diesel in the WWE), started the now
When the now changed the face of wrestling and sparked the heated and famed Monday Night Wars between Turner and McMahon, Hall said it was some of the most exciting moments of his life.
"I remember that moment when Hulk [Hogan turned heel]," Hall said. "He was the undisputed man. The golden goose. Everything he touches turns to gold. I just wanted to stand next to him so I could get that in my video scrap book."
As a lifelong wrestling fan, the addition of longtime grapplers the Rock and Roll Ex-press and the Midnight Ex-press has Hall feeling like a little boy again.
"I'm excited about watching those guys," Hall said.
It's also a chance to get back with his fans.
Since the Night of the Superstars began, Ward has made the wrestlers available for autographs and photos before the bell. Hall said he and X-Pac, however, will be staying afterward to meet their fans.
"If you come to an autograph session to meet Scott Hall, you're going to meet him," he said. "I don't ever leave people standing there. It's an honor to give somebody an autograph."

Another report from the show:
thought that it was a very, very good show! Everything ran pretty damned smooth, imo! The matches were pretty good and were ,to me anyway, very entertaining! Jimmy Valiant had to replace Ricky Morton in the tag match against the MX,due to Morton not being able to wrestle in Virginia! But he was there, and in fact, was one of the coolest people to meet and chat with! Instead of Warlord vs Barbarian,as advertised, they reunited as the Powers of Pain against a TNT team and it was actually a pretty damned good match! The POP still look in damned good shape and the Warlord is just insanely huge! Best matchwas Kid Cash against JD MIchaels! These two really put together one helluva match with the Kid barely coming out on top! April Hunter was there and..well...WOW!! Nuff said! Larry Z was there and won against Killer Kowalski ,Jr...who is friggin tall as a damned tree, but not very big size wise! His main offense was a nerve hold on Larry's trapeze muscle and yelling out to the crowd!! The midget match was just great! Short Sleeve Sampson was just dynamite! He did a running dive from the ring onto the floor onto his opponent that was just great! And he is also quite the rapper! All in all, everything went well..from the autographs to the show itself! Only thing I didn't like was when after the MX won a contreversial decision against Gibson and Valiant, promoter WARD came in and put himself over by doing a kinda bad Dusty imitation and laying out both MX memebers with bionic elbows! But he was the promoter,so I guess I might did the same!lol But I give props to him because this show was run really well and did, imo, deliver a great night for all! Now,onto SCOTT HALL and X-PAC! these two were just awesome! From HALL'S mic work and ringside antics,to X-PAC'S in ring work...just great! They stayed around after the show to do pix and autographs and I have to say that they were two of the coolest and nicest guys I have met! They seemed genuinely gracious and were very fan friendly to everyone,as far as I could see! They weren't even the main reason for me in going to this show but I am really happy that I did get to meet them and any preconcieved notions I had about these two were quickly lifted as they were indeed just super! I know that a lot of poo poo has been posted on this board about this show...alot of he said this..he did that..etc. but,all of that poo poo aside,I have to give MR. WARD props on delivering a great time for me and I would def go to more of his shows! Sorry for rambling and maybe others thought differently ,but this is just my opinion! Oh and gotta say it was cool to run into my friend Bradshaw who is always just a very cool dude! LATER!! |
