Friday night…another start to another weekend for the busiest wrestling promotion on the east coast, National Wrestling Superstars as they kicked off the first of five shows in August at the Union (NJ) Elks Lodge on August 1st. While attendance is light over the summer (not just in NWS but all promotions) over 150 fans decided to forgo the trip to the Jersey Shore and stay close to home to watch one of the best nights of action seen in Union County in a long time.
The opening contest saw former
The next bout was a #1 contender’s bout for the NWS tag team titles. The first team out was JT Highlander and Chris Banks who played up to the crowd before their opponents, Corvis Fear and JD Smooth came through the curtains to thunderous boos. Both teams seem to had scouted the other very well as all four wrestlers showed how much they wanted the title shot. In the end, after nearly 10 minutes of action, Banks and Highlander came out victorious over Fear and Smooth and were told that they would have their title shot against Oceans and Mr. Motion on October 3rd in
The third bout of the night saw local hero Ryan Angus take on the Mexican sensation Antonio Malave. Malave, coming back from a recent tour overseas showed the fans what aggressive wrestling can be like and attacked Angus from the opening bell. Maybe it was jet lag, who knows, but somehow, Angus scored a pinfall on Malave. While the ring announcer was telling the fans the result of the bout, JD Smooth ran to ringside and tossed Angus a chain. Just then, the referee turned around and saw the chain in Angus’ hand and reversed the decision (even though it was clear he did not use the chain), allowing Malave (with the help of Smooth) to steal a victory.
Next was a David vs Goliath match pitting nearly 400 pound Saddam Insane (with his body guard Danny Demanto) against
After a 20 minute intermission where the wrestlers took pictures (and Tito sold his book), the action resumed with Mr. Nick Gregory and Bonecrusher Fred Sampson taking in Brian Harley and Corey Havoc. There is a lot of history between Sampson, Gregory and Harley in
The main event saw former WWE star and Hall of Famer Tito Santana take on Danny Demanto. Demanto, who had his own cheering section in the building showed NWS promoters that he could compete with any legend or as he called them “has beens” and told NWS officials that if anything happened, not only to Tito, but any legend he put them up against, it would not be his fault. Demanto, to his credit, backed up his words and made Tito work hard, but in the end, Tito hit his patented forearm for the victory.
