I received a note from Ron Russitano of Pittsburgh, PA who wants to purchase one of my Bruno Sammartino Record Books. He told me a very interesting story about Bruno Sammartino that I thought I would share:
I have a Bruno story for you. This past summer, there was a pro boxing show at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. There were some local sports celebrities, Steelers, Pirates, ex players and former boxing champ Roy Jones, Jr at ringside. Bruno showed up with some friends and sat in the bleacher seats towards the back. Within minutes of him arriving, there was a line of all these celebrities as well as the boxing fans, to meet Bruno and get their picture taken with him. The ringside photographer left the fights to take pictures of Bruno and all these people. The line snaked through the crowd, it was incredible to see. even young people who never saw him wrestle were in line to meet Bruno. They stopped the fights and brought Bruno and former studio wrestling ref, Andy "Kid" Depaul, (who by the way is the State Athlete Commissioner) into the ring to give a speech and the crowd started to chant "Bruno, Bruno Bruno". it's amazing the amount of charisma and popularity that he still has.
