August 5th aired a February 1990 episode of Verne Gagne`s AWA All-Star Wrestling. Tony Leone versus AWA world champion "Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko Zbyszko tooks Leone over with a fireman`s carry. As fan chant "Larry sucks", commentator Lee Marshall said that you don¢t have to like him, but you have to acknowledge his accomplishments. Leone is backed to the ropes, shoves Zbyszko down, then exits the rings from an angry Zbyszko. Leone returns to find Zbyszko extending for a handshake. Leone looked away to see the crowd reaction, and Zbyszko pops him in the face. Leone is body slammed, then Zbyszko hops up to rakes Leone`s face with his boots. Zbyszko body slammed Leone again, pushed aside the referee, and planted Leone into the canvas with the piledriver. Zbyszko covered and got the pin count of 3, ending the match in under three minutes. At ringside, Eric Bischoff asked Zbyszko what was new in Larryland. The fan chants "Larry sucks" again. Zbyszko said that especially in his world, the pen being mightier than the sword was the biggest lie in history. Zbyszko described himself as the toughest, roughest and most controversial. Zbyszko said that he does not shut then walked away. He came back to an apologetic Bischoff, who said that he had nothing to do with the chant. Spike Jones versus Yukon John Nord Yukon howled and slapped fans` hands at ringside, as he entered to Creedence Clearwater Revival "Bad Moon Rising" Lee Marshall mentioned that Yukon told him that he was out to clean up the garbarge in the AWA. Co-broadcaster Ralph Strangis said that Yukon called that clearing timber. Yukon chops Spike in the corner, but Spike reversed the corner whip. Spike charged and caught a Yukon boot to the face. Spike exits the ring, then returns to forearm club and rake at Yukon`s back. Yukon comes back with a kick to the gut, then ties Spike`s arm in the top and middle rope. Yukon charges to the opposite ropes and spriongs off with a boot to the incapacitated Spike. Yukon climbs to the middle ropes in the corner, then leaps off with a flying leg drop. Yukon rolls Spike back onto his back, covers him and gets referee Gary DeRousha`s pin count of 3, in this under three minute bout. Yukon walks around the ring throwing kicks in celebration. Yukon has Bischoff back off when he gives him a better look at his ax Bertha. Nord said that he spent two years looking for answers in the Yukon. Nord said that he learned there that what didn¢t kill him, made him stronger. Bischoff brought up Col. DeBeers one armed wrestling challenge. Nord responded by mentioning that every night in the Yukon, he would become king of the camp among all the lumberjacks in a one handed lumber cutting challenge. Yukon then howls. Ox Baker gave comments regarding his Russian Brute in the main event against Sgt. Slaughter in a taped fist match. Ox said that his Brute will keep Baron Von Raschke Blitzers in the number one position, and that The Brute is going to put Slaughter in the hospital. Baker said the Marines are going down tonight when Slaughter feels the heart punch. Bischoff had mentioned that many wrestlers having put out by Ox and Brute`s finisher. Sgt. Slaughter then gave comments. He called for attention on the scum, slim, maggots that he referred to Brute and Baker as. Slaughter said that he had seen what the Brute has done, and that he had been taking tips maximizing his punching power with the taped fist by Sugar Ray Leonard. Slaughter said that the Brute will go down 1..2..3 for the U.S.A. Slaughter asked if he made himself clear, adding "you¢re dismissed..maybe permanently" Jake "Milk Man" Milliman & Kent Carlson versus Psycho & Killer of the Texas Hangmen Strangis and Marshall spoke about how it was difficult to distinguish between the masked Hangmen, as they are the same height, body mass, and outfits. There was one thing and that was one always wore an elbow pad on their left arm (like Demolition Smash). At first they said that it was Killer who wore the elbow pad. Then they said that the Hangmen changed it to Psycho to confused others. I don¢t think they did, because the elbow pad looked to be hiding a tattoo on Killer`s arm (again, like Demolition Smash). Milliman rolled away from Killer, but gets forearm clubbed down and kicked. Killer reverses the whip and punches Milliman in the gut. Milliman comes off with a flying double forearm, but Killer comes back wuth more rakes and clubs to the back. Psycho is tagged and Milliman hip tossed the incoming Hangman. Milliman holds Psycho`s arm for a tagged Carlson strike. Carlson is clubbed down, then forced in the corner for Killer`s choke with the tag rope. Psycho laid Carlson on the top rope in the corner, and both hammer him. Carlson hits Psycho with a knee off the ropes, but Carlson is taken down with a powerslam and clubs. A tagged Killer whips Carlson for a stomach strike, then Carlson is DDTs by a tagged Psycho. Carlson is held up by Killer for a Psycho`s middle rope flying club (similar to Denolition`s finisher). Hangmen get the 3 count victory, closing this match in under four minutes. Lee Marshall gave the Team Challenge Series update. He mentioned that Slaughter`s team Sarge`s Snipers had their first victory in six weeks when his teammates Col. DeBeers & Magnificent Mimi won their "beauty and the beast" mixed tag match against Baron Von Raschke and AWA ladies` world champion Candi Divine. Though the scores posted were the same as last episode with Baron Von Raschke`s Blitzers at 20 points, Larry Zbyszko`s Legends at 15 points and Sarge`s Snipers at 13 points. George Anderson versus Colonel DeBeers DeBeers walks to the ring to Guns `N` Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" Anderson escapes the headlock by shoving DeBeers to the ropes, but Anderson is charged down twice. DeBeers goes to charge again, but gets surprised by an arm drag takedown. DeBeers reverses Anderson`s wristlock, then Jake "Milkman" Milliman is shown walking around ringside, shaking hands, and carrying a yellow sign that read "The Colonel is a Turkey" Anderson reverses the wristlock, but gets flipped when DeBeers hits him in the stomach with a knee. DeBeers points and yells at Milliman, then the crowd chants "Turkey!" Anderson pulls DeBeers backwards to the mat for a roll-up pin of 2. DeBeers clubs down Anderson, kicks him, then whips him for a back body drop. DeBeers whips for another back body drop, but Anderson leapfrogged over him but got caught in DeBeers` bulldog. DeBeers lifts Anderson upside down in mid-piledriver position and slams Anderson`s front to the mat with DeBeers`s weight on top. DeBeers covers and hooks the leg for referee Gary DeRousha`s 3 count, closing the match in under three minute. DeBeers gives the fans a double bicep flex before walking back down the aisle. The Russian Brute of Baron`s Blitzers versus Sgt. Slaughter of Sarge`s Snipers in a taped fist match in Team Challenge Series main event This match was voted by fans who called the AWA fanline. Eric Bischoff said that two ambulances were nearby for this encounter. Brute dressed in red hat, CCCP shirt and camouflage pants. Sarge came to the ring slapping hands to greet fans. Sarge wore his camouflage flack jacket and carried a riding crop. The baseball bat wielding Ox was advising Brute before the match began. Brute backed Sarge against the ropes, but Sarge turned him around. Ox`s word distracted referee Gary DeRousha but didn¢t distratc the Sarge, who avoided Brute`s strike. The fans chant "USA!" An aggravated Brute shakes the top rope, as Sarge raised his arm. Lee Marshall believed that Brute wore camouflage pants to mock and upset Sarge. Brute is kicked in the stomach, then whipped for a back elbow. Sarge snap martes Brute, then hops on Brute`s stomach. Sarge clubs Brute on the ropes, but Brute comes back with a double sledgehammer to the back. Brute lands a headbutt, gut punch, then throws Sarge into the turnbuckle. Ox chokes Sarge on the middle rope, as referee DeRousha is distracted by Brute. Sarge then gets stomped and choked on the rope by Brute. Ox chokes Sarge on the ropes away as the ref`s attention was on the arm raising Brute. Sarge is body slammed onto the top rope, but kicks out of Brute`s pin cover at the count of 2. Brute gut punched, headbutted Sarge`s back, and whips him to the croner. Brute charges but both men go to the mat on the collision. Brute strikes with his knee, and eye rakes Sarge, who is on one knee. Sarge is choked in the corner, and is whipped to the opposite corner. Brute charges with a high knee, but Sarge moves, causing Brute to crash backwards after kneeing the top turnbuckle Sarge steps on Brute`s ankle as he stomps on the leg. Brute eye raked Sarge and corner whipped him for a back body drop. Brute whips Sarge chest first into the corner, and Sarge flies onto his stomach. Though it couldn¢t quite be caught by the camera angle, Lee Marshall said that he thought Sarge hit his head on the ring post. Brute whips Sarge to the corner, looks to go for a back body drop, but instead shoves Sarge`s back into the corner. Brute lifted Sarge`s left arm, as he clenched his fist for a try at the heart punch. Sarge kicked Brute away from the attempt twice, and Brute faced Sarge while he applied nerve pinch to the shoulders. Sarge`s hands squeezed Brute`s throat, and Ox went to the ring apron to distract referee DeRousha, as Sarge had clamped on the Cobra Clutch to The Brute. Sarge blocked Ox from using the baseball bat, but was his in the back by Brute`s double ax handle. Ox swings with the bat, but accidently hit The Brute. Brute collapsed, Sarge covered and got the 3, closing the match after eight minutes. Ox grabbed at Sarge, but backed off and pleaded for Sarge to do the same. Brute hits Sarge with the bat. Ox held Sarge for Brute`s heart punch, but Baron Von Raschke entered the ring and waves it off, but Sarge gets hit. Baron then had Brute and Ox to flee from the ring by showing his threatening Claw. On the floor, a frustrated Ox slams the cushion part of a folding into his head. Brute walks with his arms raises, back to the dressing room. Unknowing of Baron`s help, Sarge takes a swipe at him. Baron apologizes and tries to explain. Sarge goes to the floor to raise his arm and touch his pained chest. Eric Bischoff asked Sarge if he was okay to do an interview. Sarge told Bischoff that he has never been hit so hard in life, not even in the battlefield. Baron said that he had to get The Brute away from Ox, because that was a the cause for his craziness. Sarge yelled at Baron that he won and said that there was no reason to put guys on him. Bischoff tried to tell Sarge what Baron had done. Baron rebuked Sarge for maybe not having his guys together either. Baron cited an example of this when Sarges` Sniper teammate Colonel DeBeers attacked AWA ladies` champion Candi Divine in the mixed tag match. Sarge said this is about war, and that they will be friends afterward, as he pokes Baron in the chest. Baron said "don`t put your hands on me, Sarge. After this is over, we may not be friends" Catch the legends of AWA Monday to Friday at 12am est on ESPN Classic. |
