CLASSIC AWA SEPTEMBER 2nd TV REPORT

September 2nd aired a 1990 episode of Verne Gagne`s AWA All-Star Wrestling. There was no mention of the Team Challenge Series during this program. Jimmy Magnum (Jaime Magnum) versus D.J. Peterson DJ rushed to the ring to AC/DC`s song "TNT" Magnum backed away from DJ`s lock-up attempts, then Magnum was taken down by DJ`s leg sweep. DJ grapevined Magnum`s left leg, and sat back, pressuring Magnum`s calf against DJ`s thigh. DJ then had Magnum on his back, threaten to stomp Magnum. Referee Gary DeRousha warned DJ to keep his attack above the waist. DJ landed on Magnum`s torso with a leg drop, then yanked Magnum`s hamstring with a rolling leg snap. DJ pressed Magnum`s ankles together, and pulled back with a chinlock. The tall Magnum reached for the ropes to break the hold. Magnum started his offense with an eye rake, then double ax handled DJ. Magnum body slammed DJ, but missed with an elbow drop. DJ snap suplxed Magnum, then hit him with a flying clothesline from the top rope. DJ wrapped Magnum`s legs up with a scorpion deathlock, and sat back on Magnum. Referee DeRousha signaled the bell, as Magnum quickly submitted. This match was under four minutes. Tommy Jammer versus Tom "Rocky" Stone Jammer sprinted to the ring to the Beach Boys` song "Surfin¢ USA" Stone attacked before the bell, clubbing Jammer as he was about to step through the ropes. A hit Jammer, punched out of the corner, and swept Stone`s legs. Stone grabbed the middle rope, and Jammer yanked Stone`s legs for a release, and Stone crashed to the canvas. Like in the match earlier with DJ, Jammer had his opponent on his back, with raised legs. Jammer dropped a headbutt on Stone`s stomach, then applied an ankle twist. Jammer leg dropped Stone`s leg, then went go a step over toe hold. Stone Kicked Jammer off, and Jammer swept Stone`s leg again, and received a pin count of 2. Stone kicked him back, but Jammer leg swept for a step over toe hold. A commentating Eric Bischoff said that it looked as if Jammer had taken notes from DJ. Jammer pulled back, but Stone eye raked for an escape. Stone knife edge chopped Jammer and smashed him to the turnbuckle pad. Jammer grabbed the top ropes, blocking Stone`s second turnbuckle smash. Jammer slammed Stone`s head into the turnbuckle and struck him in the chest with a knife edge chop. In the opposite corner, fans counted along as Jammer slammed Stone ten times into the buckle. Jammer chopped Stone down, then slammed his head into the mat. Jammer jumped up and slammed Stone`s head to the mat again. Jammer twirled his index finger to signal his finisher. He Irish whipped Stone to the ropes, and wrapped him up with an abdominal stretch. Referee Sal Corrente signaled for the bell, as Stone submitted right away. This match was also under four minutes. The Annihilator versus Yukon John Nord This cameras rolled on this match after Donna Gagne`s announcements, and commentator Lee Marshall mentioned the participants in the match for the tv audience. Yukon moved Annhilator to the ropes in a lock-up, then Annhilator moved Yukon to the ropes, trying for a body slam. Annhilator raked at Yukon`s eyes, but un-phased, Yukon clubbed back. Yukon hung Annihilator arms on the top rope, then charged from the opposite ropes, with a big knockdown boot to the face. Yukon then whipped him for a Yukon wall, and Annihilator fell back. Annihilator charged and is hip tossed. Yukon howled, then knocked Annihilator to his knee with a gut kick, and continued this attack as he had Annihilator against the ropes. Annihilator reversed Yukon`s corner whip, but when Annihilator charged, Yukon dropped him with a big boot. Yukon ascended to the middle rope in the corner, howled and planted a flying leg drop. Yukon covered for the pin, and howled as referee Gary DeRousha slapped the mat for 3. This match was under three minutes Yukon patted the downed Annihilator in the face, then charged the ropes back and forth. Yukon made himself fall back, then went to his knees for a howl. Tony Leoni & The Cobra versus Killer & Psycho of the Texas Hangmen Like with the previous match, this bout started without aired announcement. The Hangmen raised their bullropes as they walked to the ring. They removed their black leather hoods to reveal black ring masks with gold trim. As the Hangman on the ring apron raised his arm for a boo call, Leoni arm dragged the in-ring Hangman. Leoni raised his arms out as to ask the Hangman #1 what he was going to do. Leoni applied a top wrist lock, but was backed to the corner and clubbed. Leoni whipped the Hangman to the corner, charged and was booted down. Hangman stomped Leoni, then choked him on the top rope. His tagged partner struck at the hung up Leoni, as the other Hangman laughed. The tagged out Hangman raised his arm for a boo call, as Hangman #2 powerslammed Leoni, and gained a pin count of 1 after an elbow drop. Leoni was whipped to the ropes for a back elbow, and held Leoni`s arm as his tagged partner kicked Leoni`s mid-section. Hangman #1 bulldogged Leoni, and received a pin of 1. Leoni punched the Hangman, and crawled between his legs to tag his partner. Cobra clubbed at the Hangman, but he absorbed the blows and struck back. Cobra was whipped to the ropes, and kneed in the back by the other Hangman on the apron. Hangman held Leoni`s arm for a tagged Hangman #2`s punch. Hangman put a spinning neckbreaker on Cobra. Commentator Lee Marshall mentioned that "Classy" Freddie Blassie made that move famous, calling it the spinning southern neckbreaker. Hangman DDT`ed Cobra, covered, but picked him off the pin at 2. Hangman held Cobra for tagged Hangman #1's headbutts to the ribs. Hangman #2 lifted Cobra under his arm, and Hangman #2 flew off the middle ropes in the corner, with a forearm strike. As Cobra was hit, Hangman #2 dropped him with a side walk slam. Hangman #1 covered, and referee Sal Corrente counted for the 3. Lee Marshall had mentioned that Psycho was the one who covered for the pin, as he had explained that he was distinguished from his partner by a red design on his boot. This match was under five minutes in duration. "Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff versus AWA world champion "Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko This match was joined in progress, and was introduced by Eric Bischoff as their first sanctioned encounter. Nikita was on the floor, and returned to the ring Zbyszko lifted him up for a backbreaker attempt. He dropped Nikita before he could complete the move, and took Nikita to the mat with a front face chancery. Zbyszko laid down his shoulder to block referee Sal Corrente`s view. The referee hopped over the men, to try to see if a choke was occurring. Zbyszko executed a spinning neckbreaker, and Nikita kicked out of the pin at 2. Zbyszko clubbed Nikita, then elbowed the back of a cornered Nikita, as crowd chants "Larry sucks" opened up. Zbyszko punched, eye raked, and choked Nikita down in the corner. Zbyszko backed away for the referee, then rolled Nikita over for a pin of 2. Zbyszko whipped Nikita to the ropes for a abdominal stretch, and pulled on the trunks for extra leverage. Zbyszko ceased the trunks pull, when the referee checked the area. Nikita hip tossed Zbyszko for an escape. Zbyszko clubbed Nikita in the corner, and Nikita kneed him back. Nikita then kicked an incoming Zbyszko, and smashed him to the turnbuckle. Former AWA world champion Nick Bockwinkel commented that Zbyszko`s weak spot was his mid-section. Zbyszko clubbed Nikita, and a commentating Lee Marshall said that Nikita`s slow offense must be due to punishment he sustained in the match. Zbyszko pulled a downed Nikita upwards for a bottom rope choke, then kneed Nikita to the floor. Lee Marshall said that Nikita was hit with a size 14 boot, when Zbyszko stomped him form the ring apron. Nikita entered the ring, gut punched Zbyszko, and snapmared him. Zbyszko moved away and avoided Nikita`s jumping elbow drop. Zbyszko went for a body slam, but Nikita rolled him up for an inside cradle. Zbyszko escaped before a count, whipped Nikita for a dropkick, but Nikita held the rope, causing Zbyszko to crash to the mat. Zbyszko pressed his forearm to his back, as "Larry sucks!" chants happened again. Nikita struck Zbyszko in the stomach, snap suplexed him, and hooked the leg for a pin count of 1. Nikita kneed Zbyszko in the corner and whipped him to the opposite corner. Nikita hesitated on his charge, and landed his back in the corner, when Zbyszko moved away. Nikita was corner whipped, and launched out with a Russian Sickle. Zbyszko was down, and Nikita fell forward, trying to recover. He made it over to Zbyszko and covered, but Zbyszko got his left shoulder up at 2. Bockwinkel did not understand why Nikita would waste time for crowd reaction as he had Zbyszko down. Nikita dropped a headbutt to the stomach, and Zbyszko pulled up the apron into the ring, as Nikita dragged him by back by the left leg. Zbyszko was spun for an atomic drop, and fell back. Zbyszko kicked out of Nikita`s pin at 2, and went to the floor. Zbyszko grabbed his championship belt, and struck at a reaching Nikita. The referee signaled for the bell, disqualifying Zbyszko. Nikita spoke with Eric Bischoff at ringside, and stated that next time he will walk out with the AWA world title around his waist. Nikita then did a double arm under flex and growled. Nikita added "you haven`t seen the last of Nikita Koloff!" "Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff versus AWA world heavyweight champion "Living Legend" Larry Zbyszko in a two out of three falls match. This match was requested by fans who called into the AWA fanline, and former National Football League defensive end "Benchwarmer" Bob Lurtsema served as a special referee. Zbyszko enters the ring to Tina Turner`s "Simply The Best", then yelled that he is the current world champion when ring announcer Donna Gagne announced him as former world champion. Donna rushed out with Zbyszko, when Nikita stormed the ring, looking to start the match immediately. Back in the ring, Nikita punched a cornered Zbyszko, then hip tossed him out of the corner. Zbyszko exits, then returns for a Nikita elbow, and exits again when Nikita threw him out of the ring. Nikita went to the floor, punched Zbyszko down, then slammed his head into the time keeper`s table. Nikita then slammed Zbyszko into the rope barrier near the fans, and beat on his own chest like a gorilla. Nikita slammed Zbyszko`s head into the ring apron, and shoved him back in the ring. Zbyszko retaliated by kneeing Nikita from the ring apron to the concrete floor. Zbyszko slammed Nikita`s head into the announcer`s table, then choked him with a microphone cord. Zbyszko applied a front face chancery in the ring as Nikita stand on the floor against the apron. Zbyszko drove a knee into Nikita`s back Commentator Lee Marshall admitted that he didn`t approve of Bob Lurtsema stating favoritism as a referee, as he had been doing in all the match he has officiated. Zbyszko choked Nikita on the middle rope. Nikita then kneed an incoming Zbyszko, and was struck back in the stomach by Zbyszko. Nikita is whipped to the corner, but Nikita grabbed Zbyszko and threw him face first into the turnbuckles. Nikita stood on the middle ropes as he cornered Zbyszko with punches. Nikita then corn whipped Zbyszko for a back elbow, and his pin cover was broken at 1, when Zbyszko put his foot on the bottom rope. Nikita got a pin count of 1, after snap marring Zbyszko for an elbow drop. Nikita Irish whipped Zbyszko for a back body drop, but Zbyszko side stepped with a roll-up pin of 3. Zbyszko won the first fall, and the replay showed that Zbyszko hooked Nikita`s trunks for extra leverage. The first fall ended in under five minutes. Zbyszko stalls on the apron, then gets gut punched and turnbuckle smashed by Nikita. Zbyszko is whipped to the ropes for a Nikita flying tackle. Zbyszko takes Nikita down with a double leg trip and Nikita gets his right shoulder up at 2, as Zbyszko`s legs are on the middle rope for extra leverage. Nikita lands a right fist on Zbyszko, but Zbyszko fires back with a spinning heel kick to Nikita`s mid-section, then snap marred Nikita for a pin of 2. Zbyszko yells to the crowd to shut up and gets another pin of 2 with a backbreaker. Zbyszko applied a chinlock and yelled to referee Lurtsema to "ask him!" if he submits. Zbyszko yells "ring the bell!" and Nikita jerks around as the fans stomp to rally his escape. Nikita is about to try to elbow out, Zbyszko instead turns him for a spinning neckbreaker, but Nikita backslides him for 3. This fall was under three minutes. Zbyszko punched and choked Nikita in the corner. Lurtsema first attempt at pulling Zbyszko back by the hair is unsuccessful, but his second try had Zbyszko yanked back to the mat. A caught off guard Zbyszko gets drilled when Nikita runs out of the corner to hit with his Russian sickle clothesline. Nikita hooks the leg, and Nikita pinned Zbyszko for the third fall win in under two minutes. The cartoon graphic of Larryland amusement park set the background, as Eric Bischoff interviewed AWA world champion "Living Legend Larry Zbyszko. He said that Bob Lurtsema deliberately attacked him form behind, for Nikita Koloff to take advantage. Zbyszko said that the history made here was like that of the 1919 fixed World Series, and the fiasco where Mr. Saito took the AWA world title in Tokyo, Japan. Zbyszko said he was ripped off, and pointed to his world title as the pride that everybody is after. Zbyszko said that he challenged all the other so-called champions, and they all backed off from fear. Zbyszko said that Nikita had gone all around the world, shooting his mouth off about a title shot. Bischoff asked Zbyszko why he thought he did not deserve it, after his success. Zbyszko said that Lurtsema deserved to be hung by the neck for his actions. Zbyszko said that we are all motived and turned on by the one great force that is greed. He chanted "we want" and said he would keep the title even if he had to lie, cheat and steal..the American way. Zbyszko said everyone will want him, because "I will be the undisputed champion of the world!" Catch the legends of AWA Monday to Friday at 12am easten standard time on ESPN Classic.
