Funk's Corner -

In 1976 Giant Baba sent a very famous Sumo wrestler to the Amarillo Territory for training to become a professional wrestler. Terry and I had worked with him privately at the Amarillo Sports Arena for two weeks. He had finished his training and was returning to Japan on Sunday.

On Saturday night, we received a call that Chief Little Eagle would not be able to make his shot in Hereford, Texas. Terry. said, "That is no problem, we can send the Japanese wrestler to take his place on the card."

I called the Japanese wrestler and told him of the good fortune that he could wrestle tonight in Hereford. The Japanese wrestler said, I can not wrestle tonight because my Hair Dresser has fixed my hair and has already left for Japan.

I told Terry what the Japanese wrestler said.

Terry replied, "What the Hell, I will pay for a hair dresser from FiFi's Beauty Salon to fix his hair before he goes to Japan! We need him in Hereford tonight.

The phone rang and it was Alex Perez returning to Amarillo and wanting to know if we had work for him. The problem was solved.

The Japanese wrestler was able to preserve his hairdo and return to Japan the next day for his Sumo retirement ceremony and the cutting of his hair.

His professional wrestling name - Genichiro Tenryu. (Debut in Japan for All Japan Pro-Wrestling November 13, 1976)
