NOTES

Happy birthday to Dutch Mantell and Jerry Lawler, both of whom turn 58 today. JBL is also celebrating today, turning 40, and Hayabusa is 39.

Tim Doyle, who helped put the show together for last night’s event at Oglethorpe University, likened the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission’s proposed regulation on pro wrestling to cracking an egg with a sledgehammer. He not only has been active in the wrestling business for over a decade, but he also has taught a course on professional wrestling at OU.

The Lisowskis had been the reigning champions as recognized by the Chicago, IL, office since they defeated Nicoli & Boris Volkoff on June 29, 1957, in Chicago.

1960: Freddie Blassie defeated Southern Heavyweight Champion Tiny Evans by disqualification at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Evans had been the reigning champion since he defeated Blassie on November 18, 1960, in Atlanta. Because of the disqualification, Evans retained the title.

1961: The Assassin defeated Jerry Graham in the main event at the Columbus Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1963: Eddie Graham defeated the Mighty Hercules to win the Eastern Heavyweight Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Hercules had been the reigning champion since he defeated Chief Big Heart on October 25, 1963, in Atlanta.

1966: Louie Tillet defeated Roger Kirby to retain the US Junior Heavyweight Title at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Tillet had been billed as champion since November 15, 1966.

1968: A title match between Georgia Heavyweight Champion Johnny Valentine and the Professional was ruled a no contest at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Joe Louis was the special referee for the match. Valentine had been the reigning champion since he defeated the Professional on November 8, 1968, in Atlanta.

1972: Bob Armstrong defeated Southern Heavyweight Champion Buddy Colt by disqualification at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Colt had been billed as champion since November 28, 1972. The program for this card mentioned that Armstrong was still recognized as Columbus Heavyweight Champion. Armstrong had been billed as such since September 16, 1972. There was also a mention of the events from November 22, 1972, where it was written by “Hilda”, who had been writing columns recapping the previous week’s events: “Last week’s matches proved unexpected and unforeseen. It also proves what a fine promoter we have. Mr. Ward did not, and he wasn’t obligated to, explain what happened. He did have the main event for us, however, between Bob Armstrong and Rock Hunter. I’ll agree that neither Bob nor Hunter had their hearts in it, but they were there. Fans have always had a great respect for Bob, but after last week, they have more. As for Hunter, I would say he “dug” and “cut” it. Thanks, fellows. As for our promoter, at his own expense, he refunded every ticket. How much fairer could he be? Our hats off to three great fellows – Bob Armstrong, Rock Hunter, and Mr. Ward. I can’t imagine what happened. All I heard was gossip, which has to be taken with a grain of salt. If what I heard was true, a recently departed mat friend would be terribly upset. As far as another fellow is concerned, let me express a fan’s feelings. If you didn’t care enough about us to come wrestle for us, we don’t need you now to come from Atlanta and make trouble for us or our promoter.”

1974: Roger Kirby & Buddy Colt, managed by Bearcat Wright, defeated Rocky Johnson & Mr. Wrestling #2 to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Kirby & Colt had been the reigning champions since they defeated Ole & Gene Anderson on November 1, 1974, in Atlanta. Also, North American Heavyweight Champion Bob Armstrong defeated Harley Race to retain the title in the semi-main event. Armstrong had been the reigning champion since he defeated Buddy Colt on June 8, 1974, in Jacksonville, FL. The Mighty Yankees defeated the Andersons in a loser leaves match.

1977: Bob Armstrong & Dick Slater defeated Ole Anderson & Stan Hansen in a main event tornado tag match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1980: Kevin Sullivan defeated Steve Keirn to win the National Television Title on the “Georgia Championship Wrestling” television program hosted by Gordon Solie.
