Zealous fans swarm Fox for premiere of Stone Cold's new film

It's not every film premiere that ends with its star guzzling beer on stage.

But "Stone Cold" Steve Austin isn't your average movie star, and the screening of "The Condemned" was not your average film premiere.

A packed house of rambunctious wrestling fans and buttoned-down WWE stars turned out to watch the action thriller Friday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

Among the parade of WWE stars in attendance were John Cena, Batista, Sgt. Slaughter, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Jimmy Hart, Mark Henry, Finlay, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, King Booker, Jim Ross, Shelton Benjamin, MVP, Johnny Nitro, Melina, Rob Van Dam, Sabu, a facepaint-less Umaga, a sunglass-clad Edge, CM Punk, Carlito, Matt Hardy and Ashley.

Each wrestler most of whom were dressed in suits (save for Cena, who was wearing a T-shirt and shorts) was greeted with large cheers when they entered the theater, but perhaps the biggest ovation was saved for HHH, who's currently sidelined from WWE action due to a torn quadriceps muscle. HHH sat with his wife, Stephanie McMahon, his brother-in-law, Shane McMahon and his mother-in-law (and WWE CEO) Linda McMahon.

During the film a violent action picture that follows 10 killers as they try to off one another on a remote island while their movements are filmed and broadcast live on the Internet the bloodthirsty audience cheered the on-screen action and occasionally called out the names of their favorite wrestlers. During a down moment, it wasn't unusual for someone to yell, "Carlito!" or "Kennedy!"

At the close of the film, a beaming Austin took the stage to greet the crowd and thank his fans. "We've been through our ups and downs and highs and lows, and everyone's always stuck with me every time I've done something, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart," Austin said.

"And there's really only one way to finish the night: Thank you very much, and that's the bottom line, 'cause Stone Cold said so," then he was tossed a few beers, which he bashed together and poured down his throat as he has so many times in the ring.

Afterward, several of Austin's fellow WWE stars offered their praise of the film, which opens in theaters April 27. "I'm a little biased: I'm a huge Stone Cold fan, but I think this is the best action flick I've seen in five, 10 years," said WWE star Mr. Kennedy. "(It had) good action, good violence, lots of swearing I loved it."

"I thought Steve did a hell of a job. It was really, really entertaining," said HHH, an admitted action movie buff. "I liked it because it wasn't a bunch of machine gun shots for the sake of machine gun shots. It was a story and the action meant something, so to me, it was better than the average action film."

HHH's wife, Stephanie McMahon, was seeing "The Condemned" for a third time Friday, but was happy to take it in with an audience. "Especially our audience," she said. "They're the best."
