Former ECW World Television Champion & the former bodyguard for The Impact Players, Jason Knight, was a special guest on this past week's live edition (07/14/08) of Monday Night Mayhem (presented by Sweet Sunshine Sauces: the official finishing sauce of The Mayhem) -- which can be heard in streaming audio every week (hosted by The Big Mosh, Blade, & DFL), and heard LIVE at 8PM ET/7PM CT every Monday night) exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (www.MondayNightMayhem.com, www.525.com, www.OnlineWorldOfWrestling.com, & www.ITunes.com).
Jason was welcomed by The Mayhem Crew, which included the official intro of his ECW nickname, "The Sexiest Man On Earth," giving credit to Paul Heyman himself for that creation...and yes...it is a moniker he does have to live with today when interacting with his fans & those supporters of the original Extreme Championship Wrestling.
Jason was very candid about his takes on the "new ECW" product, stating that he has not come across anyone who is very much in favor of what has been presented to the fans over the past two years, and no disrespect meant to the current crop of talent, who have busted their asses. Jason joked about the true fact that many of the current ECW superstars were "playing video games when the original ECW was at the ass-end of extinction." He feels that the effort to make this version of Extreme Championship Wrestling is clearly not as evident, and a lot of that has been thrown in that direction thanks to the way of Vince McMahon. Jason stated on record that he does not see it going anywhere, and that the talent is "just there." He does credit CM Punk for being one of the very few recent "extreme" talents who could have meshed well with the old ECW locker room & style, as he sees a lot of potential in his work in the WWE.
From a booking perspective, he wishes to credit "Cowboy" Bill Watts, Paul Heyman, & Tod Gordon has three of his main influences in working with the independent circuit today in Connecticut.
The feud for the ECW Championship leading into this weekend's Great American Bash between "The World's Strongest Man" Mark Henry & ECW original, "The Innovator Of Violence," Tommy Dreamer was discussed by The Mayhem Crew, Bill, & Jason. He does not know Henry personally, but does give him credit for being a talented individual and that he has lasted with the company for as long as he has. Jason sincerely believes that Tommy is the kind of guy who can have a great match with anyone "in his own humble way,"and does think that their GAB match may surprise some individuals. However, Jason added the very valid point that when you throw in writers/outsiders that have no place in the business, that "can lead to a recipe for disaster."
The late '90's saw the "boom" of tag team wrestling -- from Team 3-D/The Dudley Boyz, The Hardy Boyz, Edge & Christian, and several other teams...including ECW's Impact Players, Lance Storm & Justin Credible. Jason feels that both of them worked very well together, and played off each other's strengths, and that on both side of the fence, that most fans respected them on a professional level especially. He was not in favor of their group/entourage expanding to the voluminous numbers that it did, but more or less, rode the wave that was ECW because he loved in it so much.
Jason remembers very fondly returning to the former ECW Arena, as part of the Hardcore Homecoming event in South Philadelphia. "The Franchise" Shane Douglas (whom "he always respected") gave him a call, asking for him to be a part of the festivities. He was honored & pleased to be a part of the Justin Credible/Jerry Lynn match. It was difficult for him to keep his composure and stay in "the gimmick" that night, as there was a true overflowing of emotion & a way to give back to all of the fans that made him who he was. Bill added in his memories of that night in Philly, and how the fans were flocking to their favorite "extreme" stars for autographs after the show -- almost a night where time stood still.
As many fans know, this Hardcore Homecoming event was two days prior to the WWE's "One Night Stand" PPV. Bill asked Jason for his thoughts on similarities & differences between this event & the WWE's ONS Pay-Per-View. The only difference that he felt was that Paul Heyman was not at The Arena in Philly, while Shane was not at the show at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
Jim wished to thank The Mayhem Crew, and encourages all of his fans around the world to check out his official personal & Impact Central Dojo MySpace pages @ www.MySpace.com/OfficialECWJasonMySpace.com & www.MySpace.com/ImpactCentralDojo.
All this & much more is covered in this 30+ minute MNM interview -- including Jason's uncensored thoughts & comments on those trying to break into the business today vs. ten-fifteen years ago, the night in Buffalo, NY where all hell almost broke loose at an ECW event @ The Burt Flickinger Center, & why the first ECW One Night Stand PPV was a success in his eyes, while the second one was a "piece of sh**."
