Johnny K-9 re-arrested, bail at issue

Man accused in Gilbank shootings charged with breaching six conditions

A former biker and pro wrestler accused of murdering an Ancaster couple is back behind bars almost four months after he was released on bail.

Police said yesterday that Ion (John) William Croitoru -- known as Johnny K-9 -- was rearrested Dec. 2 outside a muffler shop on Upper James Street and charged with breaching six of his bail conditions.

Police have also laid a new extortion charge against the ex-pro wrestler, who also used the names Bedlam Bruiser and the Terrible Turk.

Croitoru, who worked as a bar bouncer in the past, has served jail time for various criminal offences, including assaults, drug trafficking, forgery and extortion. He is a former president of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club, who was kicked out of the gang in disgrace after police successfully seized the gang's fortified North End clubhouse using proceeds of crime legislation.

Croitoru was first arrested on Jan. 6 this year and charged with two counts each of first- degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the execution-style shootings of Lynn Gilbank and her husband Fred.

Lynn Gilbank, a former teacher turned criminal lawyer, and her husband were gunned down inside their Postans Path home in upscale Ancaster around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 16, 1998.

In April this year, Andre Gravelle was also charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the couple's slaying.

Andre and his brother Paul Gravelle were charged 13 years ago in relation to one of the largest hash-oil seizures in the United States.

Paul was sentenced to a two-year jail term, Andre a four-year term, in the U.S. for their involvement in the illegal drug shipment from Jamaica to Florida.

Lead Gilbank investigator Staff Sergeant Steve Hrab said Croitoru was re-arrested on six counts of failing to comply with his bail conditions along with extortion after an investigation in November.

Police allege Croitoru was not complying with Superior Court Justice Donald Gordon's conditions about remaining in his surety's presence in public, cellphone possession and having his release papers handy.

Police allege Croitoru asked an individual to help him recover some money someone owed him, leading to the new extortion charge.

Crown prosecutors will now ask a judge to revoke all Croitoru's bail conditions, the detective said.

Prosecutors may also go after a $105,000 surety put up for Croitoru's bail by his sister Mary Croitoru and her husband.

According to police, prosecutors have the legal authority to seize the $105,000 surety because although it was withdrawn, it was withdrawn after Croitoru was re-arrested.

The Crown "may estreat that money in the future," Hrab said.

The bodies of Lynn and Fred Gilbank were discovered by their son, Mark, who was returning from an out-of-town training course. Police, at the time, said someone had entered the Gilbank home and shot them to death.

Neighbours had heard loud bangs that morning and noticed a beaten-up old car spotted with primer paint.

Police have said they believed Lynn Gilbank was the target of a professional assassination related to her law practice.

Hrab said Croitoru faces outstanding drug importing charges in Parry Sound as well as an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Saskatchewan for trafficking in narcotics.

Croitoru will next appear in court on Dec. 23.
