Sports briefs: Madden resting after surgery

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

From local and wire dispatches

Sports talk host Mark Madden had a surgical procedure and was "resting well" yesterday, two days after he suffered a heart attack.

Dennis Begley, president and general manager for ESPN/WEAE-AM (1250) Pittsburgh, confirmed that Madden, 44, became ill while coaching in a dekhockey tournament Saturday evening in Reading.

The radio host and former Post-Gazette columnist drove himself to Reading Hospital and Medical Center after feeling nauseated throughout the day.

"We talked to him. He sounded in good spirits," Begley said, adding that Madden hopes to return to work in a matter of days. He said he didn't know if Madden would make it to Detroit for the station's Super Bowl coverage.
