MY THOUGHTS ON DR. DEATH’s PASSING

…..

I'm still in shock over the passing of my dear friend Doctor Death Steve Williams or as i've called him since day one, just plain Doc.

I first came to know Doc when i spent some time traveling with the Nwa back when 1 man wasn't running the world of pro wrestling, I remember Doc as always being friendly never turning down a fan for an autograph or picture, no matter how tired and banged up he was and always took a few mins to talk to each
fan making that fan feel like for those few mins the only people in the room were him and Doc no matter how many people were standing there waiting their turn.

Later on i got to spend even more time with Doc when he was in the original ECW we spent a lot of time traveling the highways and bi-ways going from airport to hotel and then hotel to show, we'd drive and laugh and seemed like in no time no matter where we were headed we got there in no time.   I can say he made each trip interesting, i never knew what he was up to, each trip was an adventure.

I'd like to talk a few mins about the 2 memories i have of Doc that stand out, and thinking of these 2 stories in the 1st darkest hrs made his death a little more bareable thinking of the good times and forgetting for just a few 2nds that there will be no more times like these ever again.

My 1st story is when ECW was in Trenton New Jersey for the 1st time and the line to get in was from the front door to the street, as we pulled up, Doc said, how we supposed to get in through the crowd? not having been told before hand I said I guess straight up through the crowd'.  As we got out Doc said, 'hold onto the strap of my bag as we go up, this way you won't get lost in the crowd'.  as we made our way up with Doc carrying his bag and a cup of coffee he kept saying 'excuse us, coming through' and most of the people moved out of his way, I'm not sure how many realized it was him, but they were nice enough to move.  Just as we got almost to the front door, this guy stands in front of him and says 'hell no I've been here since 3pm (it was now around 7) get to the back of the line where you belong' again Doc says, I said excuse me' and the guy still stands there saying what he said before.

At this point I feel Doc's bag starting to move and hoping if he does hit the guy with it I don't go flying with it, and the hand with the coffee began moving I was beginning to wonder what was gonna hit the guy 1st when his friend finally got a clue and told him, I think you better move' when the guy again said what he said in the 1st place and asked his friend, 'why should we move, we've been here since 3pm and he's just getting here, his friend said 'cause that's Doctor Death and he's looking pissed'.  At that point it was like the parting of the Red Sea, the crowd moved out of the way and we went straight up the steps, no more trouble.

My 2nd favorite story is at Wrestle Reunion in King of Prussia PA when Doc was going to make his return to the ring for the 1st time since his throat surgery.  He asked me if I was going to the show that night, and when I told him no, that I was there helping a vendor but still would've had to pay $75 to get in, he informed me, he wanted me to video tape his match, I said 'well get me a pass, a ticket, or an ok to get in and I'll be more than happy to do it.  As he said, 'stay here I'll be right back' I thought he was going to track down the promotor to get the ok (I should've known better, look who we're talking about) he came back about 2 mins later and handed me a pass, that looked like it had been ripped from someones neck, as i stood there looking at it he said 'don't worry you're in'.  I spent the whole weekend looking for someone who had 1 of those neck things the pass was supposed to be hanging from missing.

I hate the thought my dear friend Doc is no longer here, and i'll never see him again, and although i know in my heart he's in a better place and in no more pain, it doesn't ease the heartache i have wishing he was still here.  As a friend of mine said when i called her with the sad news, Terry Gordy needed a tag partner in heaven, but  darn it, we needed him here with us also.

This was sent to me by my dear frieind Maureen, better know as MO from ECW.  We all hurt as much as you do, and will miss Doc a lot.
