"Duane 'The Rock' Johnson has a 'Game Plan'

BY MARSHALL FINE

Sunday, September 23rd 2007, 4:00 AM

It's not exactly "Garbo speaks!"

But still - the Rock dancing ballet?

"I'd say those ballet scenes were definitely more daunting than crying on camera," says Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson, who also sings and sheds tears in his broad new family comedy, "The Game Plan," which opens Friday.

Johnson, the former pro-wrestling superstar, plays an egotistical professional quarterback, Joe (the King) Kingman, whose self-centered existence turns inside out when he's left with an 8-year-old daughter, Peyton (Madison Pettis), he never knew existed.

As he prepares for a championship game, Kingman also must learn to be a dad - a job that includes on-his-feet parental volunteer time at her ballet school. According to Johnson, getting smacked with a folding chair seemed preferable, at least at first.

"Like most of my buddies, I had kind of written off ballet," Johnson, 35, says. "But we spent three or four weeks with the Boston Ballet School and those children were unbelievable to work with."

Learning the dynamic grace of ballet was even more difficult, he notes, because he did it while recovering from a leg injury.

"I was rehearsing one of the football scenes and I went up in the air to throw a pass - and when I came down, I snapped my Achilles' tendon," he says, adding with a certain note of pride, "I did complete the pass. I had it reattached and rehabbed it for three or four months. But I was still dancing on one leg."

"The Game Plan" is part of, well, the game plan in Johnson's ongoing transition from professional wrestling to films. Unlike wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan, John Cena or Stone Cold Steve Austin, Johnson actually can handle a range that runs from drama ("Walking Tall") to smart action-comedy ("The Rundown").

"The Game Plan" gives Johnson a chance to play against type. His character may be a brawny gridiron star, but the role calls for him to handle slapstick and shtick with a little girl as his foil - along with genuinely vulnerable moments of emotion. Both may earn him a new set of young, female fans.

"For me, the challenge has always been to work in different genres," he says (his last two films were "Gridiron Gang" and "Be Cool"). "What attracted me to this was the broad comedy."

Not that humor didn't play a role in his persona as the Rock, wrestling's most engagingly outlandish heel. His sculpted physique, cocksure hyperbole - and arching eyebrow that seemed to have a life of its own - made him seem screen-ready. The eyebrow goes back to high school, though it didn't have the same effect back then.

"I'd walk up to a girl and say, 'Hey, what's your name?' and give her the eyebrow," he says with a laugh, adding, "It never worked!"

Johnson has another comedy in the pipeline, as Agent 23 opposite Steve Carell's Maxwell Smart in next year's "Get Smart." He has a significant role in "Southland Tales," a quirky musical-sci-fi film that played in 2006 and may be released in November. And there are rumors that he'll play comic-book hero Capt. Marvel, aka "Shazam."

He obviously has a fan base. Does he care if it ever includes critics?

"Everybody cares how people feel about their work," he says. "When people say they don't, I don't buy it. Hopefully, I've grown and maybe the critics will see the honesty and commitment in my work."

Meanwhile, he's just happy he's finally made a movie that his 6-year-old daughter can see ("She sat all the way through it," he notes). Like Joe in "The Game Plan," Johnson found that parenthood required adjustments to his life that he never imagined himself making.

"I was an only child and, admittedly, very selfish," he says. "I never thought I'd find that joy in being truly unselfish or in wanting someone else to be happy. Having a 6-year-old has challenged me in ways I never thought I'd be challenged. This movie is a little bit of art imitating life."

CM PUNK
Phil Brooks, aka CM Punk of Extreme Championship Wrestling, still has all of his old G.I. Joe toys, watches the cartoons and reads the comics, but call the pro wrestler a geek at your own peril. He says his long-standing love for all things G.I. Joe reflects his individuality inside and outside the ring.

Brooks, 28, grew up in Chicago, a huge fan of the franchise, and two of his many tattoos reflect that adoration: an Arashikage ninja clan symbol on his right forearm and the very noticeable Cobra logo on his upper right arm. "I guess I gravitate more toward the evil side," the ECW grappler says. "I'm not the all-American, Captain America type."

"O.J. LAWYER WRESTLED TRUTH
September 23, 2007

THE head of O.J. Simpson's two-man, bad-dream legal team touts a list of high-profile clients, but at least one says it ain't so. Yale Galanter claims he represented former WWF wrestler Terry Szopinski, a k a "The Warlord," after a drug bust at an airport in 2001. But The Warlord's brother, Todd Szopinski, said, "Yale Galanter never worked on my brother's case, he only took the credit after he was released." Todd told The Post's Samuel Goldsmith: "I never even met Yale. I never saw him. I never spoke to him." Todd said he hired another Florida lawyer, Lee Cohn, who once shared an office with Galanter in Fort Lauderdale.
"After my brother was released, Yale Galanter sent out press releases across the country claiming he was the lawyer," said Todd. The 6-foot-5, 350-pound Warlord says he went to Galanter's office to confront him about the false claim: "I screamed my ass off at him because I was so mad. I told him, 'Your buddy did all the work, and you're taking all the credit.' " Neither Galanter nor Cohn returned calls. "All I know about Galanter is that he's a [bleep]bag sleazeball, and he's using my brother's name," said Todd."
