NOTES & NEWS FOR TUESDAY 7/10/12

  • Bob Mulrenin

AAA matchmaker Konnan joined Mister Saint Laurent on this week's episode of MLW Radio, available right now at MLW.com. He spoke about CMLL's decision to introduce a new Mistico to replace WWE's Sin Cara.

"Everyone knows who he is. It's a guy called Dragon Lee. He's a young high flyer who is actually very good and does some really wild [stuff], but isn't as polished as Mistico and he's not very well liked even though he's a face in CMLL. One of the reasons is because Mexico City mostly likes heels. Mostly everyone gets booed in Arena Mexico that are babyfaces. He's already getting booed and usually guys, whether it's the guy who took over the Psicosis gimmick or the guy that took over the La Parka gimmick, at the beginning they get a lot of heat from the people because they know they're not the original and people shout [stuff] at them."

"Usually guys that were clones weren't as good as the original guys and this guy isn't going to be the exception. I think that it's CMLL being desperate because nothing they're doing right now is really drawing. They don't really have any real big stars. They have a lot of good young wrestlers and some good veteran wrestlers, but they don't have those stars where you can bring them to a TV station and ask them to do an interview."

UNION HEADLINES:

- Results from Saturday night's "Reign Of Terror" event

- Fundraising continues for "Kingdom" documentary

Union of Independent Professional Wrestlers "Reign Of Terror" results from Saturday night in Toronto, Canada:

-Ashley Sixx b Rip Impact via submission

-Alex Vega b Ashley Sixx for the vacant Northern Lights Cruiserweight title (note: Shawn LaFleur vacated the belt due to injury. Sixx had Vega locked into a submission hold but reared back to far and let his shoulders hit the canvas, thus pinning himself)

-Psycho Mike Rollins b RJ City by pinfall

-Michael Elgin and Sebastian Suave went to a 30 minute draw. (note: After the match the fans began chanting for "five more minutes". Elgin took the mic, praised Suave for his hard work. But instead of saying yes to extending the match, Elgin smashed Suave in the face with the mic and brutally assaulted him until Union officials could intervene.)

-Union Tag Team champions Ethan Page and Mr. Melo (subbing for Joey Kings) b Brent Banks and Alessandro Del Bruno by pinfall to retain the titles

-Union Heavyweight champion Josh Alexander b Pepper Parks b submission to retain the title.

The fundraising campaign for "Kingdom", the feature-length documentary film about Anthony Kingdom James and The Union of Independent Professional Wrestlers' WRESTLESTOCK event is only a week old but is closing in on the two-thirds completion point. Fans can check out the first trailer for the movie and make pledges to help support the film's editing process. A series of incentive packages has been put together for contributors that include tickets to The Union's September event, Union t-shirts, DVD sets of both the documentary and the WrestleStock event, tickets to the film's premiere screening and even a chance to have your "First Day of Training as a Pro Wrestler".

Besides focusing on Anthony Kingdom James, the film will feature appearances by former ECW World champion Steve Corino, his son Colby Corino, ROH superstar Michael Elgin, El Generico, "Big Rig" Brodie Lee, former NWA president James Miller and a host of talented independent professional wrestlers.

Check out the first trailer for the documentary at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/148828 and check out the list of rewards. Pick the right one for you and donate. Support the Union and help the movie's director John Chipman bring our story to the world at large.
