On the Value of the Super 8 Tournament Today:
The Super 8 seems to have been a vehicle for a lot of guys, to get them to bigger and better. I think it still has a lot of value. It's done a lot for me, in terms of getting me exposure in some of the magazines, as well as getting me more bookings.
On Future Plans:
I would love to do the Super 8 every year in which I am capable. Jim Kettner--and that tournament--have done so much for my career. That first tournament, I was really just looking to get my name out there. When you go in there like I did in the second tournament with expectations, that makes it a lot harder. This year should be the hardest of all, but I'm hoping I can win. That's clearly the goal every year ... to win it. If I did win, I'd love to come back and defend it every year I can.
On Training in Ohio Valley Wrestling/Al Snow:
It was just great. I think in a lot of ways I wasn't ready yet for some of the experiences I was getting. Al was great. He was really good at taking guys of different sizes and showing them how they should be acting in the ring. He taught them to do more on the fly. Simple stuff Al would test us with ... I didn't know how to do that stuff back then. Al is good though. That's why he spent so much time with doing Tough Enough and in the WWE developmental system.
On What Tommaso Has Learned:
This past year has been really good. I've had some opportunities to work with Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate. Hopefully I can use some of that experience to bring an even better performance to Super 8 fans.
ECWA Announces Super 8 Change of Venue; 1st Super 8 Competitor Tommaso Ciampa
EAST COAST WRESTLING ASSOCIATION, Vorhees, New Jersey--For the past two years, Tommaso Ciampa has dedicated himself to winning the East Coast Wrestling Association's annual Super 8 tournament. Unfortunately, with losses to Nick Logan (2008) and Austin "Consequences" Creed (2009), he has done nothing but come up short. This year ... could a change of scenery to Vorhees, New Jersey be just the change needed to get him over the hump and land him the prestigious Super 8 trophy held by men such as Creed, "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels, Low-Ki, Davey Richards, and Jerry Lynn in years past? And, with that, could he follow Creed's footsteps by parlaying a Super 8 win into a major-league contract with WWE (or TNA)?For the first time in the fifteen-year history of Super 8, the tournament will NOT be taking place in Delaware. New ECWA owner Mike Tartaglia has made the call to shift the tournament to a new location--The Flyers Skate Zone in Vorhees, New Jersey--so the show can be more accessible to ADDITIONAL East Coast fans in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, while still being being close to Delaware. Either way, it will make this year’s Super 8 tournament more centrally located than ever before.
Little else is known right now about this year's version of the tournament, which has--in years past--helped propel the careers of dozens of individuals into the spotlight of WWE, TNA, and ROH.
Despite this massive unknown, Ciampa is not afraid, and was quick to sign the dotted line and agree to be the first man to try his luck with this year's field. On this week's edition of IN THE ROOM with Brady Hicks on thebradyhicks.com, Ciampa proudly proclaimed, "I've been around this sport for a lot of years, and I feel like this could be the year when it all finally starts to come together for me. Professionally, the last few years competing at Super 8 have been ... disappointing to say the least. Still, I have to look at the competition and say 'You know, I've been in it two years and made the finals both times. I must be doing something right. I'm just looking forward to 2011 being the year i can finally put it all together'."
Could the 2011 Super 8 tournament in Vorhees, New Jersey be the venue when Project Ciampa FINALLY puts it all together and goes all the way? And if he does, how long could it really be before WWE, TNA, and/or ROH come calling with a full-time contract?
Tune in each week to the IN THE ROOM podcast on thebradyhicks.com, as a new member of the 2011 Super 8 class is announced. Thanks for posting the full Bret Hart interview I had sent earlier. Some great stuff in there about Morrison, HBK / HOF, and also who his best opponent is (a tie between Mr. Perfect and Dynamite Kid.. he even says "Dynamite might have truly been the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be")
Anyway, a couple things from Right After Wrestling podcast this week that might be interesting for you:
- Jimmy Korderas has a theory that a 40 man Rumble might lead to roster cuts, talking about the traditional "Battle Royal payday" at Mania coming early because of low stock prices and economic challenges for the WWE
- Jimmy also talks about the yearly "wellness" letter he received in the mail on Monday, where the WWE reminds current and former talent that they can be sent to rehab should they need it, on WWE's dime.
