Another of the all-time great international wrestling superstars will be with us in Charlotte for this summer's fanfest weekend. The youngest of three wrestling brothers, Mark Lewin has been a star from the beginning. Lewin partnered with fellow Buffalo, New York native Don Curtis early on, headlining major territories in the Northeast and Midwest, and swapping the United States tag team championship a couple times in 1958 with "brothers" Eddie and Jerry Graham. Inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame just last weekend, Lewin and Curtis were a top team in the late-1950s and early-1960s until moving to Florida and then going their separate ways. It was in 1963 that Lewin first used the "Maniac" moniker, a bad guy persona that he'd alternate consistently with his "babyface" image his entire career.
It was in the 1960s that Lewin became a huge star in Australia and New Zealand for promoter Jim Barnett and parlayed his drawing power into a position of "booker" for the region's tours. In the mid-1970s, Lewin's epic battles with The Sheik and Abdullah the Butcher drew huge houses in Detroit, where he won the United States championship. Lewin maintained his globetrotter status throughout the late-1970s and early-1980s, mixing tours of the Orient with stays in Florida and Texas, as well. It was in 1983 when Kevin Sullivan unveiled "The Purple Haze" as a member of his Army of Darkness in Florida, battling the territories biggest stars Dusty Rhodes, Blackjack Mulligan and Mike Graham. He and Sullivan also tagged on the undercard at the very first Starrcade in 1983. He'd continue to travel the world, too, in most places with Gary Hart "controlling" the maniacal one. Lewin, now 72 and having lived abroad for many years, will make his first public appearance in Charlotte this August.
Mr. Lewin joins 20 other featured legends announced thus far for our NWA Wrestling Legends Fanfest Weekend. Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Dave Brown, Bob Caudle, Chris Cruise, Don Fargo, Jackie Fargo, Bobby Fulton, Jimmy Hart, Rich Landrum, Bugsy McGraw, Magnum TA, Angelo Mosca, Angelo Mosca Jr., Blackjack Mulligan, Harley Race, Billy Robinson, Tommy Rogers, Lance Russell, and Bill Watts will be signing autographs and taking photos with fans.
More guest announcements coming soon!
