NWS Internet News Update For Week Of 5/17
The Submission Specialist Takes The 2010 J-Cup Tournament By Storm, New NWS Tag-Team Champions To Be Crowned This Summer, And More
Hello NWS fans! This is your weekly update on what's happened, what is happening now, and what is going to happen soon in the nation's leading family-friendly pro wrestling promotion, National Wrestling Superstars.
Upcoming Shows This Weekend
This Friday night May 21st, NWS returns to the Bergenfield, NJ V.F.W. Hall (321 South Washington Avenue, just north of Teaneck Road and Route 4), with a 7:45pm bell time.
And in the words of Friday night's headliner, if you miss out on this hot night of action, "It's not my fault..." In fact, he has been saying for years that everything that happens around him is not his fault.
If you haven't guessed already, we are talking about recent WWE RAW TV star Gene Snitsky. And this Friday night, he will be part of a unique match that has become his specialty in NWS, a "Loser Gets Put Through A Door Match". The object of the match is pretty much what it says... to win, you smash your opponent through a wooden door. And the opponent who has answered the challenge and will be trying to give Snitsky a face full of splinters is New Milford area star Mo Sexton.
Plus, making their first ever appearance in Bergenfield will be the 800+ pound undefeated tag-team behemoths known as The Nigerian Nightmares (Maifu & Saifu). These monsters have torn a path of destruction in NWS since their debut over a year ago, including plowing through the competition to win the 2010 J-Cup Tag-Team Tournament. But on Friday night, they will face a team that has taken them to the limit on multiple occasions, Reality Check ("The Cold-Hearted Playa" Danny Demanto & "Too Cocky" Kevin Matthews). Will Demanto and Matthews get lucky that night and hand The Nightmares their first loss, or will they join the list of teams on the losing end of the Nightmares' undefeated streak?
Also on the bill, sister all-ladies promotion Women Superstars Uncensored's Spirit Champion Brittney Savage will defend her title against rising star Tina SanAntonio, and NWS Heavyweight Champion "Corrupted" Corey Havoc and NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans will also see ring time. Plus also in action will be "Mr. Entertainment" J.D. Smoothie, Boris Nobika and his manager Comrade Chow, J.P. Pierce, Pastor George, Blade Michaels, and the despised manager from Dubai, King Ran-sid Akhbar Idu Stinq.
Tickets are only $19 for adults and $17 for kids and seniors.
This Saturday night May 22nd, NWS debuts at the Livingston, NJ High School Gym (30 Robert H. Harp Drive, minutes from Route 10 and the Livingston Circle), with a 7:35pm bell time.
Topping the bill will be former WWE TV legend, still going strong in the ring after nearly thirty years, former Intercontinental and Tag-Team Champion and Hall-of-Famer "El Matador" Tito Santana, who will issue an open challenge to anyone in the NWS locker room to meet him in the ring.
And also, recent WWE RAW TV star Gene Snitsky will also issue an open challenge to anyone in the NWS locker room (indeed, any brave soul in the entire building) to face him in a unique match that has become his specialty in NWS, a "Loser Gets Put Through A Door Match". The object of the match is pretty much what it says... to win, you smash your opponent through a wooden door. Who will answer the challenge, and will he be successful, or just end up with a face full of splinters?
But the other buzz around Livingston is current NWS Cruiserweight Champion Jumping Joey Janela defending his title in a Triple-Threat Match against two former champions, "Mr Entertainment" J.D. Smoothie and Mighty Mikey Pacifica. Not only will the fans witness three of the Northeast's top high-fliers in the ring at the same time, they will also have the chance to welcome back Livingston High School alumnus Diane D'Alessio, now Diane Janela, who will proudly be in the corner of her champion son.
The NWS Heavyweight Title will also be on the line as the champion "Corrupted" Corey Havoc will defend the title against luchador Manuel Manny Moore, and Jersey Shore Champion "G.Q." Myke Quest and Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans will face each other in a Title-Versus-Title Challenge.
Also not to be missed that night is the appearance of the 800+ pound undefeated tag-team known as The Nigerian Nightmares (Maifu & Saifu). These two behemoths have been on a tear as of late, and in Livingston they will look to crush an as-yet unnamed pair of victims (who will be identified as soon as we can find two opponents with sufficient life insurance coverage).
Tickets are only $20 for ringside seats and $18 for bleacher seats.
Tickets are available by calling the NWS box office at (732) 888-1704. All major charge cards are accepted, and group rates are available for groups of ten or more. Remaining seats, if any, will go on sale at the door one hour before bell time.
Results From Last Weekend:
Friday night May 14th, NWS held its biggest show of the year, the 2010 Chris Candido Memorial J-Cup Tournament, at the Kenilworth, NJ Veterans Center. A capacity crowd, including standing-room-only fans, filled the hall to see twelve of the circuit's best cruiserweight, middleweight, and junior heavyweights. And they were certainly not disappointed, as this was one of the wildest J-Cup Tournaments ever, and they didn't even notice the lack of air conditioning and the hot weather outside, as the action in the ring was even hotter.
- The night began with all twelve J-Cup participants surrounding the ring and paying tribute to the late great Chris Candido.
- The rules were explained to the fans: In the first round, twelve wrestlers would compete in four triple-threat matches, with the four winners going on to compete in two one-on-one semifinal matches, followed by the final match. In the first and second rounds, the matches would have a ten-minute time limit, with a five-minute sudden death overtime if there was no winner after ten minutes, and if no winner after the five-minute overtime, the fans would choose the winner. The final match would have a twenty-minute time-limit, with repeated five-minute overtime periods until there was a winner.
- In the First Round:
- Match #1: John "Tap-Out" Walters defeated NWS Cruiserweight Champion Jumping Joey Janela and Nick Talent. After a hard-hitting battle, Janela blocked a flying splash attempt by Nick Talent and threw him out of the ring, but then Walters locked a Sharpshooter on Janela who tapped out.
- Match #2: Match #2: Former WWE developmental protégé "Platinum" Pat Buck defeated ROH star Alex Payne and "Too Hot" Steve Scott. After a pitched battle inside and outside the ring, Buck thwarted a superplex attempt by Payne and locked him in a Dragon Sleeper, causing Payne to tap out and giving Buck the victory.
- Before the next match, Reality Check (Danny Demanto & Kevin Matthews & Nicky Oceans) came out to the ring unannounced. After their customary hurling of insults at the fans, Demanto and Matthews claimed they would win the heavyweight Battle Royal later tonight to earn a match against former WWE star Kamala, and would both take him apart. They also guaranteed that Nicky Oceans would be the 2010 J-Cup Tournament winner.
- Match #3: NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans defeated Jock Mafia member Chris D'Andrea and Sabotage. After another high-flying match, Sabotage had been leveled by Oceans' Boom-Boom-Pow finisher, and local hero D'Andrea was all set to finish off Oceans, when Danny Demanto and Kevin Matthews came to ringside. They apparently were making good on their earlier promise, as Demanto distracted the referee, Matthews sneaked into the ring and hit D'Andrea with a foreign object, knocking him cold. Oceans then covered D'Andrea and got the 1-2-3.
- Match #4: Jock Mafia member Mike Dennis defeated Devon Moore and "Mr. Entertainment" J.D. Smoothie. The newcomer Dennis thrilled the crowd as he held his own against the two veterans Smoothie and Moore. After a ten-minute fight, the bell rang with no winner. The three then battled into the five-minute overtime period, and Devon Moore eventually leveled Dennis with a super kick, but the five minutes expired before the referee could count to three. Under the rules, the fans were asked to pick the winner by a show of thumbs-up or thumbs-down, and Dennis was clearly the crowd favorite in this match, and was declared the winner.
- The next match was a Baker's Dozen Heavyweight Battle Royal, with the winner to receive a match later that night against former WWE star "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala. Former WWE & WCW star "America's Hero" The Patriot was introduced as a special guest referee. The battle royal participants were: The Masked Assassin, "The Happy Hillbilly" Justin Blackwell, Reality Check members "The Cold-Hearted Playa" Danny Demanto and "Too Cocky" Kevin Matthews, Baghdad Bullies member Saddam Insane, NWS Heavyweight Champion "Corrupted" Corey Havoc, Mister Nick Gregory, Snake-Eyez, "Cannonball" Jeff Guerrero, Jay Silva, "The Little Gipper" Steve Gipke, Anthony Scorase, and Jack Spade. The final two members were, ironically, both members of Reality Check, Demanto and Matthews. They proclaimed themselves as co-winners and said they would take down Kamala two-on-one, but NWS officials insisted that there could only be one winner and they would have to fight each other. Matthews said he refused to fight his own partner and friend, and then added that he didn't want to have to show Demanto that he was the better wrestler. This led to a shoving match between the two, and it looked like they were going to fight each other, when they both turned and attacked The Patriot. The attack was thwarted by the appearance of Kamala who ran out from the back. Patriot seized the microphone and demanded that the match with Kamala later on be a tag-team match with him and Kamala against Reality Check. Commissioner Moore was only too happy to agree.
- In the Semifinal Round:
- NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans defeated Jock Mafia member Mike Dennis. Dennis held his own against the champion and came close to upsetting him on several occasions. But late in the match, Oceans grabbed referee Sergeant Jimmy Storm and threw him in front of a flying body press from Dennis, knocking out Storm. Oceans' teammates Danny Demanto and Kevin Matthews came to ringside once again, with Demanto leveling Dennis with a foreign object. Oceans then covered Dennis as Matthews revived the referee, who saw the pin and counted 1-2-3 for Oceans.
- John "Tap Out" Walters defeated former WWE star "Platinum" Pat Buck by submission. This was another competitive semifinal match, and after a heated battle, Walters reversed a sunset-flip attempt by Buck into a Sharpshooter, and Buck tapped out, giving Walters the victory and sending him on to the finals against Oceans.
- Former WWE stars "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala & "America's Hero" The Patriot defeated Reality Check ("The Cold-Hearted Playa" Danny Demanto & "Too Cocky" Kevin Matthews). The two teams kept the match even, and towards the end, Reality Check had leveled both Patriot and Kamala, and Demanto was poised on the top rope ready to deliver a finishing splash to Kamala, when Mike Dennis and Chris D'Andrea of The Jock Mafia came out and hit Demanto with the same "Wet Floor" sign that Demanto had used on Mike Dennis earlier. Demanto fell off the top rope and was avalanched in the corner by Kamala and pinned for the 1-2-3. Demanto and Matthews were furious at The Jock Mafia (apparently turnabout was not fair play when it was used against them), but Commissioner Moore ordered them back, and announced that when NWS returned to nearby Union, NJ in August, there would be a match for the currently vacant NWS Tag-Team Titles between The Jock Mafia and Reality Check members Kevin Matthews & Nicky Oceans. Commissioner Moore then announced that Demanto would not be part of that match because he had something extra special in mind for him that night... a match against former ECW hardcore icon and long-time rival Balls Mahoney... inside a fifteen foot-high STEEL CAGE!
- In the J-Cup Tournament Finals, John Walters (now hailed as "The Submission Specialist") defeated NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans. After the two were introduced, Commissioner Moore announced that he was disgusted that Oceans made it to the finals with outside interference from his teammates, and he would not have a tournament dedicated to a classy wrestler like Chris Candido end the same way. He then called out the other ten members of the J-Cup field to surround the ring and directed them to prevent any outside interference. Demanto and Matthews also came out, incensed, but were sent back to the locker room by the officials. The bell rang and the match began, and Oceans and Walters, both ring veterans, battled evenly. Walters managed to escape Oceans' Boom-Boom-Pow finisher attempt, but then Oceans delivered a superkick and then went to the top rope to finish Walters off. Walters launched a dropkick at Oceans while he was standing on the top rope, causing him to spike himself on the turnbuckle. Walters then hit a hurricanrana on Oceans, flipping him onto the mat, then held on to his legs and put him in a Sharphooter. As Oceans screamed in pain, Demanto and Matthews tried to rush the ring once again, but the other J-Cup wrestlers kept them from getting anywhere near the ring. With no outside help, Oceans was forced to finally tap out, and Walters was announced as the winner and awarded the trophy as the fans cheered on The Submission Specialist as the 2010 J-Cup Tournament Champion.
National Wrestling Superstars put on a sensational show this past Saturday, May 15 at the Flemington, NJ American Legion Hall, in front of the smallest crowd in almost two years, and giving credit to the talent who went out and gave more 125% in effort for the fans in attendance.
- The opening contest was a Three Way Dance between Mighty Mikey Pacifica, "Mr. Entertainment" J.D. Smooth (with manager Gigalo Joe Jones) and "The White Urkel" B. Fehrm, with the winner getting a bout later on in the show to determine the number-one contender for the NWS Cruiserweight Title. The three battled nonstop with Fehrm taking a beating from both Pacifica and Smooth, which made the finish even more amazing when Fehrm pinned Smooth for the upset win.
- Match #2: In what was being billed as a Battle of the J-Cup participants, NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans, who was accompanied to ringside by fellow Reality Check member Kevin Matthews, took on "Platinum" Pat Buck. Both of these stars were coming off sensational matches at the J-Cup the night prior, and battled back and forth for nearly ten minutes before Matthews tried interfrring and Buck went to him, allowing Oceans to catch him by surprise for a schooboy rollup and the 1-2-3 for the win.
- Match #3 saw the 905-pound undefeated team known as the Nigerian Nightmares take on four members of the the ZWO (Zoo World Order) along with their manager Diamond Johnny and their "zookeeper" Freddy Famalgahide, and while the odds were in favor of the ZWO, it was the size and experience that ultimately was the animal team's downfall, when after beating Goat Boy, NWS Commissioner Gino Moore went to ringside and threw in the towel giving the Nightmares the win. It wasn't over because as security was helping the ZWO out of the ring, the Nightmares attacked referee Jimmy Storm before former WWE star "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala came to the rescue. The Nigerians, in awe of Kamala, knelt and looked up to the former TV star and left the ring peacefully.
- Match #4 was billed as a Three-Way Battle of Supremacy, pitting former WWE developmental star "Too Cocky" Kevin Matthews against ROH standout Alex Payne and the 2010 J-Cup winner John Walters. Matthews, the larger and most vocal of the three, saw Pat Buck in the entrance way and while he poked fun at him for being screwed earlier, Buck got closer and closer to the ring and Matthews backed into Walters, who hit him with a reverse neckbreaker and put him into a Sharpshooter where Matthews tapped out. That left Payne and Walters, who battled it out for the next twelve minutes before Walters caught Payne in an STF causing Payne to tap out.
- The next match saw the mysterious Soul Assassin take on "The White Urkel" B. Fehrm for the number-one contender spot for the NWS Cruiserweight Title currently held by Joey Janela. The Soul Assassin lived up to his name by destroying Fehrm and becoming the new #1 contender for the belt.
- The main event saw NWS Heavyweight Champion "Corrupted" Corey Havoc team with one-half of the Lone Rangers tag team Jay Silva, with manager Gigalo Joe Jones, as they took on Team TV Legends, "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala and the Famous TV Clown, with manager Diamond Johnny. This match was fun for all as the former TV legends battled their opponents for nearly twelve minutes before the referee counted both Havoc and Silva down with a double pin giving the victory to the Clown and Kamala.
The 2010 J-Cup Goes To The Submission Specialist
Last Friday's 2010 Chris Candido Memorial J-Cup Tournament in Kenilworth, NJ will go down in history as one of the most unpredictable incarnations of that tournament yet. And it will also go down in history where the winner won every match by submission.
Already a respected star on the circuit, "Hurricane" John Walters came into this tournament with relatively few NWS fans or wrestlers having seen him beforeor knowing what he is capable of. But that all changed last Friday.
Not merely content to take the tournament by storm, Walters changed his nickname to "Tap-out", and that is exactly what he made the opposition do, tap out, to three successive sharpshooters on three impressive opponents: NWS Cruiserweight Champion Jumping Joey Janela, formerWWE developmental protege Platinum Pat Buck, and in the finals, NWS Junior Heavyweight Champion "The Love Machine" Nicky Oceans. By the end of the night, Walters was hailed as "The Submission Specialist", and he left little doubt that no potential opponent of his is safe.
And to reinforce that claim, Walters won a three-way elimination match the following night in Flemington, NJ by making both of his opponents tap out, catching former WWE developmental protege "Too Cocky" Kevin Matthews in a sharpshooter, and Ring Of Honor standout Alex Payne in an STF.
So who will be Walters' next victim? It's anybody's guess, and the only way to find out is to be there.
New NWS Tag-Team Champions To Be Crowned This Summer
Earlier this year, NWS Commissioner Gino Moore declared the NWS Tag-Team Titles to be vacant as the champions had not defended their titles in quite some time. They remained vacant while NWS management decided what to do with them.
With the appearance of new and exciting tag-teams in NWS, and the intense level of competition at this year's J-Cup Tag-Team Tournament, the time seemed ripe to crown new champions.
And last Friday night in Kenilworth, two tag-teams' bitter rivalry gave Commissioner Gino Moore the opportunity he had been looking for. NWS newcomers The Jock Mafia (Mike Dennis & Chris D'Andrea) had been feuding with Reality Check members Nicky Oceans and Kevin Matthews. Last Friday night, Dennis and D'Andrea were both entered into the 2010 J-Cup Tournament as singles wrestlers. In the first round, D'Andrea and Nicky Oceans were part of one of the first-round three-way matches, and D'Andrea was on the verge of finishing off Oceans when Oceans' teammates Kevin Matthews and Danny Demanto interfered and cost D'Andrea the match.
Later in the semifinal round, Oceans was battling D'Andrea's partner Mike Dennis, and once again Matthews and Demanto interfered on Oceans' behalf and cost Dennis the victory.
But The Jock Mafia evened the score later that same evening. Demanto and Matthews were battling former WWE stars The Patriot and Kamala, and when Demanto went to the top rope to deliver a moonsault on Kamala, D'Andrea and Dennis interfered and caused Demanto and Matthews to lose the match.
While Security held the two teams apart, Commissioner Moore ruled that the two teams would meet in nearby Union, NJ (The Jock Mafia's home town) in August, and that the winning team would be declared the new undisputed NWS Tag-Team Champions. This has the makings of an ultimate showdown, and one that no fan in the area should miss.
