NWS Results From Wildwood, August 17th      I was a perfect August evening in Wildwood, NJ as National Wrestling Superstars continued their Beach Bedlam 2005 Tour this past Wednesday (August 17) on the beach with a show headlined by “the greatest Intercontinental Champion of All-Time, The Honky Tonk Man”.  With temperatures were around 80 degrees and not a cloud in the sky and fans lined up early for what has become the best bargain on the boardwalk since thanks to the Wildwood TDC, all kids under 12 were admitted free and adults paid only $3.00 per show.

Show #1

Funky White Boy took on J.R. Ryder, who was accompanied to ringside by Dark Carnival’s Jo-Jo.  Funky ticked off the larger Ryder and Jo-Jo by dancing with the crowds in the stands to his entrance music (what else…Play That Funky Music White Boy).  The crowd was so into the dancing that the man behind the music had to re-start the song so everyone could get a chance to dance.  Once Funky got close to the ring, Ryder grabbed him and pulled him into the ring.  Ryder, thinking this was going to be an easy match, was caught by surprise by the smaller Funky, who not only scored two near pin falls, but also hit a frog splash off the top rope.  When he went for the pin, Jo-Jo pulled the referee out of the ring and Ryder picked up Funky for a slam and a pin for the win.

The second match was for the NWS/FWF Cruiserweight title pitting champion Antonio Malave against the arrogant J.D. Smooth.  Smooth promised that the belt was coming home with him and he would be defending the title on Friday night in Delaware and not Malave, but the champion had other ideas and put on a display of Luchador action that confused Smooth.  Smooth decided “enough already” and used the tape from his wrist to try to choke out the champion.  The crowd started getting on his case and rather than concentrate on the match, Smooth started challenging the fans.  That was his downfall as Malave spent the next 3 minutes punishing his opponent and scored the pin and the win.

The main event saw Dark Carnival’s Jo-Jo (escorted to the ring by J.R. Ryder) take on “The Greatest Intercontinental Champion Of All Time” The Honky Tonk Man.  HTM came to the ring escorted by a camera crew who is doing a documentary on his career and danced and sang his theme song to the fans.  This annoyed Jo-Jo who told HTM to “stop doing that”, which of course only made the former champion go further with his song and dance act.  Once the match started, Jo-Jo attacked HTM and put his head against the ropes, then dragged the referee to the far side of the ring, allowing Ryder to do his “dirty work”.  Then Jo-Jo used his tape to choke the former champion before the referee (thanks to the fans pointing it out) caught him and threatened to disqualify him.  Jo-Jo pushed the ref aside and told Ryder to get up on the apron.  Ryder grabbed HTM and held him as Jo-Jo went off the far ropes to gore him. But the HTM moved and Jo-Jo hit Ryder, knocking him off the apron.  Then HTM caught Jo-Jo in the “Shake, Rattle and Roll”, which set up for the pin and the win.  It was not over as Ryder attacked HTM as he was celebrating with his fans.  Once security separated the two, Commissioner Gino Moore told Ryder he had had enough and that during the 2nd show, Ryder would get a chance to face The Honky Tonk Man one-on-one.

Show #2       Revenge was on the mind of Funky White Boy in the first match as he was signed to battle Dark Carnival’s Jo-Jo.  During the first show, Jo-Jo repeatedly interfered and Funky blamed him for costing him the match.  Jo-Jo just laughed and said “you’re next”.  This lead to a bit of comedy as FWB started dancing with the crowd again and Jo-Jo got madder and madder.  Just as in the first show, when FWB got close to the ring, he was dragged in and beat upon.  This time though, Funky seemed to be inspired by the fans on the beach and hit not one, but two frog splashes onto Jo-Jo and scored a 1-2-3 pin in the ring.

The next match saw J.D. Smooth take on Nicky Oceans in what had to be the “wrestling” match of the night as both wrestlers spent nearly 12 minutes exchanging hold for hold, counter for counter and had the fans on their feet cheering and booing the wrestlers (at one point there were 9 consecutive arm drags, that had the fans counting).  At the 10 minute mark, Oceans threw Smooth out of the ring and did a running dive off the top rope onto Smooth in the sand.  The two continued fighting in the sand and as the referee ordered them back into the ring, Smooth threw a handful of sand into the officials face.  Back in the ring, Oceans caught Smooth in a “ground torture” submission, but with the referee blinded on the outside, he could not see Smooth tapping out.  Oceans went to help the official and as he went back into the ring, Smooth hit him with a “S U” (an FU but as Smooth called it a “Smooth U”) for the win.  After seeing these two wrestlers work, it is obvious to anyone who saw them that they do indeed belong in a wrestling ring and can work any promotion or any wrestler.

The final match was a rematch of sorts from the opening contest as J.R. Ryder took on The Honky Tonk Man.  After nearly 8 minutes of singing and dancing with the fans outside the ring, Ryder and HTM finally locked up and Ryder attacked the former IC Champion with a tremendous series of punches and kicks.  Then he made a fatal mistake…he chopped the HTM while he was in the former.  Not many wrestling fans are aware of the fact that HTM hates being chopped and the former champion turned Ryder around and hit him with chops of his own.  He then hit him with the Shake Rattle and Roll and it was over.  The winner by pinfall, The Honky Tonk Man.

Next NWS event Friday in Wilmington, DE, then next Wednesday back in Wildwood on the beach. Visit the NWS website (www.nwswrestling.com) for all upcoming events.
