RING OF HONOR: McGINNESS vs. MARUFUJI

A MUST SEE MATCH, NOT TO BE MISSED….

McGuinness vs. Marufuji!!!
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Back in September of 2006, Ring of Honor presented one of the biggest shows in its history, "Glory by Honor V, Night 2". Not only did the show mark ROH’s debut inside the fabled Grand Ballroom at the Hammerstein, not only did it feature a ceremony honoring the legendary Bruno Sammartino, but it also featured three epic World Title matches. One pitted Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli against Austin Aries & Roderick Strong for the ROH World Tag Titles, while the other put Bryan Danielson opposite KENTA with the ROH World Title up for grabs. The third of the three title matches was one of historical importance as it pitted Nigel McGuinness against Naomichi Marufuji with the GHC Heavyweight Title on the line for the first time in the United States.

Nigel stepped up his game that night, nearly becoming the first gaijin to hold that coveted title, but Marufuji was able to escape with the title still in his possession. Marufuji go onto lose the title to Misawa in December of 2006, whereas Nigel would defeat another NOAH alumni in Takeshi Morishima at "Undeniable" to become ROH World Champion. And ever since that night, the ROH faithful have savored at the possibility of seeing these two world-class athletes lock up once more.

That possibility came even closer to fruition at "Death Before Dishonor VI" after Marufuji beat Go Shiozaki and Nigel retained his title against Castagnoli, Black, and Danielson. As Nigel celebrated his victory, Marufuji made his way to the stage and looked on, an obvious challenge to the champion. Shortly thereafter it was announced on rohwrestling.com that Marufuji would receive a title shot somewhere down the line against whoever that champion may be. Well that time has finally come, and that opportunity may be in the palm of Marufuji’s hand!

It is ROH’s distinct pleasure to finally announce another rematch that fans have been waiting years for: Nigel McGuinness versus Naomichi Marufuji at the Hammerstein Ballroom! And if Nigel can make it past Jerry Lynn with the title still in his possession, this match WILL be a World Title Match. It’s the ROH champion’s opportunity to redeem that 2006 loss, and it may be the former GHC champion’s chance to become the second NOAH superstar to be called ROH World Champion.

Between the previously announced Fight Without Honor pitting Morishima against Danielson, as well as the return of Sasaki & Nakajima, "Final Battle 2008" is shaping up to be the blow-away wrestling event of the year. Tickets are still available here at www.rohwrestling.com, so don’t be left standing out in the cold!

The Plight of Bobby Dempsey
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Since the "Good Times, Great Memories" event back in April of 2007, Bobby Dempsey has found himself in a precarious position. After graduating from the ROH Academy in July of 2005, Dempsey fought to make a name for himself alongside his twin brother Derrick, but success came to Derrick first as he captured the ROH Top of the Class Trophy at the "Hell Freezes Over" pre-show. Happy for his brother, Bob still wanted that brass ring for himself, but the opportunity never came until after Derrick lost the trophy to Shane Hagadorn at "Destiny", and disappeared from ROH shortly thereafter. Bob fought valiantly to bring to trophy back to the Dempsey house, but failed repeatedly, in large part to due the underhanded tactics of its holder.

Frustrated and alone, yet finding increasing support from the ROH fans, Dempsey jumped at Tank Toland’s rather backhanded offer of assistance that April night. Tank offered to turn Bobby into a paragon of fitness, a model of a man, instead of the out of shape wretch Toland saw him as. Toland, albeit half-heartedly, tried to motivate Bobby to get into shape, but really found it more fun to verbally, and physically abuse him. And after Toland was brought into Sweet & Sour Inc. as Chris Hero’s personal trainer, well the abuse and humiliation only got worse. What was once a simple kick in the butt turned into repeated slaps across the face, Tank’s looks of disappointment became Hero’s verbal abuse, while the hundred squats a night became 500 or more. And once Hagadorn became a part of the group, Bobby’s humiliation only got worse as the man he never got true revenge on was now party to his humiliation.

But after months of being forced under the ring, or forced to stay in the locker room, a light of hope came to Bobby in the unlikely form of Brent Albright. It started at "A New Level" when Brent refused to hit Bobby after his vicious assault on SnS, and has slowly evolved into an outright plea on Albright’s behalf for Dempsey to stand up for himself, and revolt against Sweeny and his crew. Sweeney responded by threatening Bobby’s place in SnS if he didn’t start earning his keep.

So in Dayton, for the first time in months, Dempsey was put into the ring to compete, and defeated Ninja Yellow in just under 3 minutes. Sweeney still found cause to berate and abuse him. Later that night, Dempsey actually seemed prepared to walk away with Albright after Brent came to the aid of Roderick Strong, but he was dragged away, by his hair no less, by Hagadorn.

Now Dempsey is at a crossroads of sorts. One path is his oddly comfortable position within Sweet & Sour Inc. There he knows his place, and he knows what to expect. The other side is to follow Albright into the unknown, an infinitely scary place. But really, how much abuse can one man take? He’s had his spirit broken, and his will crushed. Can Dempsey reach down and find that part of him that’s willing to fight? Maybe some answers will come this weekend in St. Louis and Nashville because sources say Sweeney has told Bobby that its "time to earn his next meal".

December 3rd: Rhett Titus has had disparaging remarks for Grizzly Redwood and Luke Williams as of late, and now he’ll have to back up those words in suburban St. Louis on Friday night. "Addicted to Love" will team with new found friend and Kenny King's YRR partner, Sal Rinauro, to take on the unorthodox duo of Redwood and Luke in tag team action!

December 3rd: Don't forget that also on Friday, Kenny King will face Kenny Omega in a singles grudge match stemming from Montreal where King left Omega to fall to the Briscoes. Then on Saturday in Nashville, King, Titus, and Rinauro will face Omega and the Briscoes in a 6-Man-Tag Team affair.

December 3rd: There is a 1 day sale at www.rohwrestling.com where you can save 20% off your order. For details click here: http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=2338

December 3rd: Larry Sweeney has been reportedly gloating to anyone who will listen, saying he’s got the best young tag team around. And it appears now that they will have an opportunity to prove it. Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards of Sweet-n-Sour Incorporated will be on hand in Philadelphia on 12/26 and are demanding a "high profile tag team match". Sweeney commented, “Hahahahaha, once again Sweet-n-Sour proves why it is the straw that stirs the drink! Davey and Eddie are top shelf, and we intend to prove it. The ROH Booking Committee will be forced to take us into championship consideration - one way or another."

December 3rd: ROH officials spoke briefly with Jimmy Jacobs about the challenge laid out by the Necro Butcher, Kevin Steen, and El Generico for Philly on 12/26. Jacobs said with a smirk, “A game. That is all this challenge represents. This is an attempt by Necro to get into my head, to spew the tale that only he hears in his deranged mind. I laugh at the notion that I’d run the Age of the Fall headlong into a slaughter by not only facing Necro, Steen, and Generico – all three with which we’ve certainly played the game – but by also agreeing to have one of us team with Mark and Jay Briscoe. Surely this is a game crafted by the mind of a child. A child, who in Collinsville and Nashville, won’t like the game I intend to play.”

December 3rd: For those fans attending the Nashville event on Saturday night, the folks at Vanderbilt University have asked that everybody should park in lots 73, 74, and 75. To access these lots, turn off of West End Avenue onto Natchez Trace. The lots will be on the right.

December 3rd: We will have it on good authority that a huge announcement regarding “Final Battle” will be made in the next 24 hours. More on this as it develops.

December 2nd: It appears that dangerous feudal lines may cross on 12/26 in Philadelphia! The ROH World Tag Team Champions, Kevin Steen and El Generico, have requested to team up with the man they saved from a sure beat down in Toronto, The Necro Butcher! Steen and Generico have made it known to ROH officials that they are chomping at the bit to get their hands on the Briscoe Brothers again, especially after the sheer disrespect that they dealt with after their “Rising Above” PPV encounter, while Necro is dying for another chance to exact revenge on the Age of the Fall. These three men have requested a 6-man-grudge match! We’re awaiting word from both the Briscoes and the AOTF on whether this six-man-battle will happen!

December 2nd: Speaking of Necro, we now know what he’ll be doing in Nashville on 12/6. Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black basically told Necro in the ROH Videowire www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArgX8V2BULk to “bring it on” and he’s vehemently stated that he's going do just that. One night after he teams with “Crazy” Ace Steel in suburban St. Louis to face Jacobs and Delirious, he will once again face the AOTF, this time in the form of former ROH World Tag Champs, Jacobs and Black! And Necro has selected a partner that knows the AOTF all too well. Fresh off his “I Quit” victory over Jacobs at “Rising Above”, Austin Aries will team with Necro in Nashville! All four of these men have been entrenched in one battle of another over the past several weeks, and all bets are off on 12/6. One thing to consider is that Aries is facing Tyler Black in a one-on-one match in St. Louis, so who knows how well Aries will fare this Saturday even with Necro at his side!

December 2nd: ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness and Claudio Castagnoli will oppose the team of Bryan Danielson and Jerry Lynn on 12/5 in St. Louis. Now we’ve come to learn that McGuinness and Castagnoli have an open contract for a tag team match on 12/26 in Philly! More on this as it develops.

December 2nd: Alex Payne made his biggest impact in ROH during the epic McGuinness/Danielson championship classic at “Rising Above”. “Sugarfoot” will return to singles action on the 12/6 Nashville main show!

December 2nd: The ROH Booking Committee is bringing the Four-Corner-Survival back to New York City during “Final Battle” on 12/27. The first entry into the fray is none other than Sweet-n-Sour’s “Young Knockout Kid” Chris Hero! We’ll have more competitors as we get closer to 12/27!

December 2nd: The movie "The Wrestler" in which Ring of Honor is featured opens December 17th in limited release. The reviews so far have been excellent, especially the performance of star Mickey Rourke. The movie is featured in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine (pg. 74) with Britney Spears on the cover. There was also a great article in the New York Times entertainment section this past weekend on the movie and Rourke. You can read the article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/30/magazine/30rourke-t.html.

December 2nd: Due to the popularity of the Cyber Monday Sale we've extended it for an additional 24 hours. You can still purchase 2004 ROH DVD's for only $8 each and save 40% off all tickets for upcoming live events. The sale will now end on Wednesday at 9am EST. This is only a 24 hour sale so don't delay. Sale ends Tuesday morning at 9am EST.

December 1st: A match of great international importance has been signed for Philadelphia on 12/26. Larry Sweeney has done it again, as he’s got his charge, Go Shiozaki, signed to a one-on-one match against former ROH World Champion Takeshi Morishima! “Go is going to be a legend in Japan,” chortled Sweeney. “Before Morishima and Danielson tear into each other in New York, I’m going to show him how Sweet-n-Sour operates, daddy! Go Shiozaki is going to chop into that big teddy bear, cut him down to size, and when it’s all said and done and Go returns to Japan, that price tag is gonna go through the roof! Ain’t no doubt about it!”

December 1st:  The new ROH Video Wire is posted at

December 1st:  Sorry for the brief update today.  We'll be back tomorrow with a lot more news leading into this weekend's events.

A Broken Man
Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Up until September 20th everything seemed to be going the right way for Shane Hagadorn. He was a proud member of Sweet & Sour Inc, his man, Adam Pearce, had just regained the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship, and his team had beaten and humiliated Erick Stevens, Roderick Strong, and the Vulture Squad. “Glory by Honor VII” was a glorious night for the manservant, but twenty-four hours later the wheels apparently all came off.

The change was immediately noticeable at the “Return of the 187” event when the normally loud and obnoxious Hagadorn spent the majority of his night sitting in the corner and sulking, nearly breaking into tears according to a couple eyewitness reports from ringside fans. His hair was unkempt, his face unshaven, and his clothes, while never top of the line, had degenerated into sweatpants and an SnS t-shirt.

But it wasn’t until shortly before the “French Connection” event that the ROH faithful found out Sweeney had sent Hagadorn to a therapist to treat some sort of extreme depression. The only official statement Sweeney would make was that Shane had “lost his purpose”, but refused to elaborate on the meaning of that statement. But apparently there is video floating around the Internet of what this loss of purpose has done to the former manservant.

Further evidence was presented at the two most recent ROH events in Dayton and Chicago. Rumor has it that the first night in Dayton, Hagadorn was apparently slightly intoxicated during the Four Corner Survival, and told some fans at ringside he was now on anti-depressants. There were apparently some words exchanged between Sweeney and Hagadorn about his “unprofessionalism” and his “terrible attire”. Yet in Chicago it must have been even worse because Hagadorn apparently was not allowed to accompany the rest of Sweet & Sour Inc to ringside, although he was spotted after the event yelling and cursing at the ring crew to hurry up so he could enjoy his night.

Well it’s not entirely clear what’s happened to bring about such a change in this normally verbose and irritating individual; one can make several educated guesses as to the reasons. Shortly after “GBHVII”, Sweeney announced he was pulling Adam Pearce out of ROH, basically taking away Hagadorn’s reason for existing since “Glory by Honor V”, as well as removing his best friend from the company. Since Hagadorn is still associating with Sweet & Sour, obviously he must have understood Sweeney’s motivation for doing so, but it still doesn’t necessarily sit well with Hagadorn.

In addition, some digging on the part of ROH officials has uncovered that at that Philadelphia event, Hagadorn suffered both a fractured left shoulder and rotator cuff damage, in addition to severe ligament damage to his left knee. And apparently these were both preexisting conditions as Bryan Danielson initially injured his shoulder back at “Reborn Again” while Hagadorn underwent a minor knee surgery in April of this year.

Each of these elements could play into the reasons why Hagadorn has become a shell of his former self, and it’s anybody’s guess which version of this man will show up in St. Louis and Nashville. But word on the street is that if he doesn’t start cleaning up his act, Sweeney just may have to clean house.

I've included some photos that were sent to us by George Tahinos back in 2006.
