Actor from 'The Wrestler' indicted in steroids case, chase

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - An actor from the film "The Wrestler" who is accused of leading the police on a car chase through Eastchester as he attempted to flee from a steroids arrest was indicted yesterday by a federal grand jury in White Plains.

Scott Siegel, 34, was charged with one count of possessing and distributing steroids, and two counts of assaulting law enforcement officers. He faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Siegel, of Nautilus Place in New Rochelle, portrayed a steroids dealer in the critically acclaimed film "The Wrestler."

But it was his alleged real-life steroids dealing that led to the chase on Feb. 18 in Eastchester. Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents and police tried to take Siegel into custody outside his parents' home in the gated Lake Isle community when he fled in a Cadillac Escalade rather than be caught, federal officials said.

After a car chase, a quick switch to another car, and finally a foot chase, he was arrested on Highland Avenue by federal agents and Tuckahoe and Eastchester police. Federal prosecutors said that along the way, he slammed into a DEA car and tried to run down another officer.

Siegel's lawyer, Barry Levin, said yesterday that his client acted out of fear.

"I feel that it was a momentary lapse of judgment," Levin said. "But by no means did he assault any police officer or any DEA agent."

Siegel has been held at the Westchester County jail in Valhalla since his appearance in federal court following his arrest. He was taken from court in an ambulance, complaining of chest pains after a federal magistrate judge denied him bail.

Siegel has twice been convicted for illegal drugs. He was convicted in October 1999 of two counts each of attempting to possess and distribute Ecstasy. He was arrested on a second charge while out on bail on the initial charge. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in federal prison, according to court records.

Actor Mickey Rourke, whose portrayal of the lead character in the film earned him an Academy Award nomination, said on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" that he and director Darren Aronofsky cast Siegel as a steroids dealer after seeing the powerfully built Siegel in a Miami nightclub.

Siegel is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in U.S. District Court in White Plains.
