HISTORY IN A HEADLOCK
Launch of new Canadian wrestling history book brings out wrestling alumni
For decades Edmonton's Sales Pavilion was ther host site for a weekly night of pro wrestling thrills and spills featuring some of the most colourful characters in wrestling history. Now, a few of the top stars of Stampede Wrestling over the past decade are returning to the Alberta capital in celebration of a new book which celebrates their storeyed careers.
When Brandon, Manitoba wrestler Vance Nevada set out to chronicle a comprehensive history of pro wrestling in western Canada, he had a few goals in mind. One, to recognize the legacy of hundreds of men and women that have contributed to wrestling's on-going success in this region. Second, he wanted to tell the story from a wrestler's perspective, to capture to voice of his peers and predecessors. His new book, WRESTLING IN THE CANADIAN WEST has accomplished both of those goals, and is drawing rave reviews from within the industry, including Stampede Wrestling alumni Karl Moffat and Johnny Devine.
Karl Moffat began his wrestling career in 1983 under Stu Hart's banner and after a few years of wrestling coast to coast under his own name, saw his greatest success when he donned a hockey mask in 1987 to become Jason the Terrible - a ring ruffian inspired by the horror movie character of the same name. His popularity with the fans, though, was undeniable and he soon became a top fan favorite on the Stampede circuit. In addition to tours in Puerto Rico and Japan, Moffat has been one of the most recognized characters of the Stampede circuit.
Johnny Devine is a Winnipeg-born grappler who got his start in the Hart dungeon and began his wrestling career in 1997. Dubbed "Hot Shot", Devine was front and centre when the Hart Brothers relaunched the Stampede brand in 1999 and held the International tag team titles. He has since gone on to feature status with the Orlando, Florida-based Total Non-Stop Action and has secured select matches with the WWE.
All three wrestlers will be appearing for a special book signing and launch at Happy Harbour Comics (Version One) on Saturday afternoon, December 12th from 3 pm to 5 pm to talk wrestling with Edmonton mat fans and to sign copies of the new book.
Nevada, who recently relocated to Red Deer, has been on an incredible role this year with the release of his book, his ninth listing in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Top 500 wrestlers worldwide, and his recent announcement as the 2010 James C. Melby Historian award recipient.
