EBENSBURG — World Wrestling Entertainment mogul Vince McMahon’s gift to his mother and her Cambria County home — a $2.5 million tennis center — will be unveiled Saturday.

The borough is opening the doors to the facility and kicking off more than a weeklong open house to show off a lakeside facility that boasts three indoor and three outdoor tennis courts, a pro shop and locker rooms.

“It’s going to be second-to-none,” said Jamie Taylor, facility tennis pro.

Taylor of Duncansville, the former pro at Blair Racquet & Fitness Center, has played on a lot of local floors, but he’s excited to get his programs going in the borough.

“I’m not trying to sound overanxious, but the facilities I’ve been at just can’t compare to this,” he said.

The indoor court is a Rebound Ace, a “softer” hard court with a medium to high bounce, he says. It’s the same surface used at the Australian Open.

The outside court surface is Deco turf.

“They use [Deco turf] at the U.S. Open,” Taylor said. “When you look at the matches at the series tournaments right now, you’re looking at the same thing.”

Word is starting to spread, Taylor said, noting that 80 people have signed up for memberships. The facility has been under construction since late fall.

McMahon is paying for the facility through his Vince McMahon Foundation as a present to his mother, Vicki Askew, an avid tennis fan.

She is married to Harold Askew, a former councilman and borough native. The couple has been living in the borough for nearly 10 years.

The borough is offering a preview of the facility from Saturday to Aug. 27, urging residents to schedule a free lesson to experience the center.

“Recreation continues to grow in the borough,” recreation director Matt Pfeil said. “This just expands the opportunities we have to offer to the community.”
