Wrestlemania weekend has grown into a wrestling fan’s dream week with numerous shows and a dazzling array of talent. The roots to this all go back to 2006 and a six man tag team match. In 2019, the six man tag team match has become a tradition.
In 2006, current WWN VP Of Talent Relations & Creative Gabe Sapolsky led creative for Ring Of Honor. ROH made a bold move and decided to run Wrestlemania weekend in Chicago in 2006. They invited Dragon Gate, who requested to present a six man tag team match. The request was granted. The match changed history. This went down as one of the greatest matches of that time period. It paved the way for ROH to continue running on Wrestlemania weekend. This grew into the scene we have today.
The tradition continued with the ROH and Dragon Gate partnership in 2007 and 2008. The relationship between ROH, Sapolsky and Dragon Gate dissolved in late 2008. This led to Sapolsky and Dragon Gate forming Dragon Gate USA in 2009. The first goal of DGUSA was to continue the growing Six Man Tag Team Tradition. Dragon Gate USA presented the “Mercury Rising” event, featuring a six man tag team main event, during Wrestlemania weekend in 2010.
The Six Man Tag Team Tradition continued in DGUSA, until the promotion closed its doors in 2014. The “Mercury Rising” moniker was then picked up for the new WWN Supershow event, with the goal of continuing the Six Man Tag Team Tradition. “Supershow” is obviously a nod to the original “supercard” name. This means the “WWN Supershow: Mercury Rising” name brings together the history of the annual six man tag.
The Six Man Tag Team Tradition has taken several different forms over the years. In 2004, it was an entire tournament. In 2015, it featured women athletes. In 2017, it was six individual performers fighting to become the first WWN Champion. The list of participants in these historic bouts have ranged from potential hall of famers to the top superstars of today to upcoming stars, like last year.
The WWN Supershow: Mercury Rising 2019 will take place on April 5th at 3pm. It will be over in time to make it to NXT Takeover. Tickets are on sale at Etix.com. This year will be special as there will be two six man tag team matches. They will pit EVOLVE vs. international promotions DDT and wXw. This year’s Six Man Tag Team Matches are:
