As we once again get closer and closer to the summer, I find myself looking forward to this year's "Sportsfest", the biggest event of the year for my wrestling company, WXW. For those that don't know, Sportsfest is an annual tradition that we promote alongside the city of Allentown, PA, and is actually part of an even bigger community event. Basically, "Sportsfest" is a gigantic weekend fair that takes place in the beautiful Cedar Beach Park in Allentown. The event is free to the public and features many sports-related activities and exhibitions.
Allentown decided that they wanted something very special to serve as a major centerpiece for this, so they contacted us to provide a major wrestling event as part of "Sportsfest". The show was free to attend, and drew thousands and thousands of people. The city loved it so much that we have been asked back every year since, and every year, we have made it bigger and bigger. We even broadcast the event on live television throughout the area, making it our most watched event of the year.
When I think back to past Sportsfest's, I smile, remembering all of the special moments that we have experienced with our fans. I remember Sabu lighting up the crowd like no other in 2005. I remember one of my students, Batista, making a surprise appearance in 2004 that brought everyone to their feet. I remember Tommy Dreamer and The Sandman leading an extreme revolution right into Sportsfest 2001. and I remember back in 1998 when my nephew, The Rock, showed up with the late Owen Hart, Mick Foley, D-Lo Brown and Mark Henry to take care of business.
Thinking about all that, I know that this year's event will be the biggest of them all. The event will take place on Friday night, July 13th, so you know it's going to be unlucky for someone, but I think we are all lucky to be able to share this great event together. Besides all the superstars and big matches, it's a great chance for WXW to really deliver and say thank you to the fans who support us all year. I would also like to thank the many Chatterbox readers who I have met over the past months at conventions. It is nice to know that there are so many loyal fans who take the time to come up to us wrestlers and share memories of our past.
I'm enjoying writing this column from my beautiful hotel room from Pensacola Florida where I am vacationing with my family.
