Two Butchers at Kahnawake wrestling gala

Dan Rosenburg

There will be two butchers for the price of one at the gala professional wrestling show scheduled for the Kahnawake Sports Complex on Friday, Aug. 12.

Abdullah the Butcher and Paul (The Butcher) Vachon are just two of the famous names slated to be in the building that night. Abdullah, in fact, will see active duty in the main event against local radio station deejay Andy Ellison in a rematch of their memorable brawl held for charity at the Cavendish Mall a couple of years ago. Former Montreal Canadians 'policeman' Gino Odjick will be in Ellison's corner.

Paul Vachon and his illustrious brother, Maurice (Mad Dog) Vachon, will be honoured in a special ceremony, along with Kahnawake's own Billy Two Rivers, all household names in the heyday of the highly successful Grand Prix Wrestling promotion run by The Butcher (Vachon, not Abdullah) in Montreal in the 1970s. The trio will be receiving lifetime achievement awards.

Also on the card in next month's extravaganza will be a women's match that should bring back vivid memories of another Vachon - Vivien - who dominated women's pro wrestling in North America three decades ago until she was tragically killed in a car accident. The opponents in the Aug. 12 match-up are two grapplers named Chantelle and Tianna.

As an added attraction, Kyle Zachary of Kahnawake is scheduled to make his pro mat debut. Proceeds will benefit the Kahnawake Youth Center. For more information, call the Youth Center at 632-6601.
