Stories driven by any and all things offensive ushered in the most successful period in professional wrestling.

The so-called Attitude Era of professional wrestling marked the last time that WWE was at the height of mainstream popularity — running from December 1997 until May 2002.

What defined this period was its commitment to provocative, politically incorrect storylines and characters.

Characters like The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin dominated screen time, but the company was scattered with bizarre mid-card characters and morally troubling stories.

An emblematic storyline arc of the era involved Val Venis, a porn star character whose real life performer is now running a marijuana dispensary under the name Kaptain Kannabis.

Venis was betrayed by his Japanese tag team partner that led to an off-screen samurai sword castration — which was revealed to be avoided due to shrinkage and an assist from John Wayne Bobbit.

The Rock

There is no doubt that Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson is one of the most recognizable stars to emerge from the sports entertainment industry.

Johnson had a stretch as the leading man in some films early in his career, but did not become an action darling until his 2011 role in "Fast Five."

The former WWE superstar remains a part-time performer with the company — appearing at WrestleMania 31 last March with fighter and "Furious 7" co-star Ronda Rousey to tease a potential tag team match.
