Rock-solid 'Game Plan' muscles its way to top of box office

The Rock has game.

In an upset, former wrestler Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson pummeled his box office competition.

The new Disney comedy "The Game Plan," starring Johnson as a football star confronted by the 8-year-old daughter he never knew about, pulled in about $22.7 million to land at No. 1.

Universal Pictures' terrorism thriller "The Kingdom," with Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, trailed with $17.7 million in sales, surprising industry pundits who predicted it would open at the top.

Last weekend's top movie, "Resident Evil: Extinction," fell a steep 66% from its opening weekend gross, taking in $8 million to finish third.

With a PG rating, "The Game Plan" took advantage of a dry spell for kid-friendly movies.

"There was definitely pent-up demand for people who don't necessarily want to go to the heavy R-rated films," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney.

Johnson is not the first action hero to become a kid-friendly star. In 2005, Disney's Vin Diesel comedy "The Pacifier" surprised everyone by opening at No. 1 with a take of $30.6 million. And Arnold Schwarzenegger had a huge hit in 1990 with his unconventional turn in "Kindergarten Cop."

"The Kingdom," featuring Foxx and Garner as members of a U.S. team investigating a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia, faced heavy competition from other violent R-rated films, among them "3:10 to Yuma," "The Brave One" and "Eastern Promises."

Article from NY Post:   ROCK'S GOT 'GAME' AT THE BOX OFFICE

By DAN KADISON

October 1, 2007 -- Disney has a winning "Game Plan" - its family film starring Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson blitzed "The Kingdom" over the weekend to run off with the box-office title, according to studio estimates released yesterday.

The laugher about a quarterback discovering he has a young daughter grossed $22.7 million during its three-day debut.

"The Rock has now been Disney-ized," said Jeff Bock, an analyst with box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"You take an action star, put him in a broad family comedy and you get a hit movie."

"The Kingdom" - the Middle East mission flick with Jamie Foxx - made $17.7 million for a second-place debut. The heavily marketed movie "really did crumble under The Rock's weight," said Bock. "The genre is really exhausted right now."

"Resident Evil: Extinction" dropped to third place in its second weekend with $8 million.

Meanwhile, "Good Luck Chuck" took in $6.3 million for a fourth-spot showing - while "3:10 To Yuma" boarded fifth with $4.2 million.
