"BEAUTIFUL" BOBBY EATON: ONE OF 30 FEATURED GUESTS AT FANFEST!

Some young boys are born to wrestle.

Growing up in Huntsville, Alabama, in the 1970s, Bobby Eaton attended wrestling matches every week. Through his regular attendance, Eaton got to know Gus Gulas, who promoted the town on behalf of his more well-known brother Nick. When Gus invited the teenager to help set up the ring, Eaton jumped at the chance. “I was just a kid, you know,” Eaton said. “Me and a friend of mine, we helped put the ring up on Fridays and wrestle a little bit beforehand. We’d practice like that and watch and watch and eventually you learn things. After a while, my friend and I, we could probably have a better match than some of the guys on the card. I got paid $25 one time and I was in hog heaven.”

Since his debut in 1976, Eaton has been doing exactly that – having some of the best matches on the card. His underhanded tactics and high-flying moves, combined with a knack for making partners and opponents shine, has brought him respect from every part of the wrestling game.

Eaton started out in the Alabama-Tennessee territory, and formed a solid heel team called Ebony & Ivory with Koko B. Ware. But it wasn’t until 1983, when he hooked up with Dennis Condrey and motormouth manager Jim Cornette as the Midnight Express, that he hit the big time. In a talent swap, the trio moved from Tennessee to the Mid-South promotion in Louisiana, where its quick-hitting heel maneuvers revolutionized a territory known for bigger, slower wrestlers.

“I knew when we went down there and got our first big break, I knew we had something. “We had a ton of heat on us. People hated us. This was the first big push I had. Nobody was going to beat us, we knew that,” Eaton said.

There, the Midnight Express started a feud with the Rock-n-Roll Express that would linger for years, capped off by a memorable tumble by Eaton in a scaffold match. Eaton and Condrey captured every tag title under the sun in Mid-South, Texas and the Carolinas. When Condrey departed in 1987 for personal reasons, Eaton brought Stan Lane seamlessly into the fold – those two held the NWA World and U.S. tag titles at the same time in 1988, back when belts meant something.

As a singles wrestler, Eaton had a nice run with WCW TV title, and a hysterical stint with Lord Steven Regal as the Bluebloods, as the properly mannered Brit tried to teach the Earl of Eaton some manners. “Oh, I really loved it; it was fun. The whole thing was the video we did before we even wrestled together where he’s making me stand tall and getting me cleaned up. That was the funniest part about it,” Eaton said. Incidentally, Eaton was a latecomer to the team – the initial Blueblood spot had been reserved for Paul Levesque, who departed for the WWF as Triple H.

In his characteristic friendly, laid-back manner, Eaton said he tried to do what was right for the business, regardless of where he was on the card. “I knew what it was all about. I didn’t have any ego,” he said. Fans who meet him at the Capitol Wrestling Legends Fanfest will no doubt agree.

SIGHT-SEEING IN WASHINGTON, DC!

I've been travelling a good bit lately, getting ready for this summer's fanfest weekend. Last Monday, I took a few hours in the afternoon to do some sightseeing around the nation's capital.

I've driven through that rough stretch of I-95 many times in the last several years, but this was my first sightseeing since I was a kid.

I hope those of you travelling to Rockville for fanfest weekend will allow a little extra time, or an extra day, to do a little bit of sightseeing for yourself. Even if you don't drive, downtown DC is just a short trip on the Metro system (the Twinbrook station is directly behind the Doubletree Hotel in Rockville.)

Please make plans now to be with us for 3 HUGE DAYS celebrating wrestling tradition in our nation's capital!

This will make a great summer vacation!
