…….
"Down for the Count: The Ups and Downs of Professional Wrestling" Saturday, January 10th from 2 to 4 PM. Wrestling posters of Al Vass will be on display in the Reference Room (basement) from January through February 2009. Do you want to know what it's really like to be a pro wrestler? Meet 6-time All-American Wrestling Federation champ Tito Torres and former pro wrestler and wrestling referee Al "Samson" Vass with special guest Crusher Townsend. Hear about the history of wrestling on Staten Island. Pro wrestling has changed over the years, from old school wrestling in the State of New York to today's style of pro wrestling. Al "Samson" Vass will convey the dangerous moves which pro wrestlers are asked to perform and the hazards that exist in replicating wrestling moves at home. There will be an autograph and photo session and a short film featuring old school wrestling and Al "Samson" Vass. Everyone will receive a 8X10 photo of Al "Samson" Vass. In addition, Al "Samson" Vass will give a tour of his poster exhibit in the Reference Room and will discuss his work. Al "Samson" Vass was a pro wrestler during the 1960s. He was a professional wrestling referee, licensed by the New York State Athletic Commission, from 1970 to 2000. The New York Public Library St. George Library Center 5 Central Avenue Staten Island, NY 10301 (718) 442-8560. Located just one block away from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.
